do these things actually work? i have the opportunity to pick one up cheap. would it be worth it just for another pair of VU meters to bounce to the music?

I had one for a while and couldn't get it to do much of anything. If it does "denoise" I sure as heck couldn't tell. The meters are the best part imho.

They can be useful with some kinds of source material. I haven't used one in many years, but I recall that noise 'pumping' was a big problem -- so much that I switched it out of circuit about 99% of the time.

I picked one up a while back to match my KC-6060 scope...and the meters DO look neat. Can't say I've ever used it for its stated purpose.

This unit is designed to cover up tape hiss, so it would have no effect on CDs (they are perfect anyway). Even FM is probably too quiet to hear much. The de-noiser has a variable filter that attenuates the treble when no treble music is playing. In the reviews back in the day the Kenwood got high marks. I would recommend it for RtR tape listening. It is a playback device only btw.
The Burwen and the Phase Linear auto correlator were two other successful de-noisers.

Thanks for the input peeps. I am a incurable cassette freak and always looking for something to "diss the hiss". I just picked one up. They aren't cheap anymore...if you even locate one. Soooo, if nothing else, I bought two VU's for $25 a pop.
