Sad MC225 - how not to update/mod

Will fix about Anything
This sad MC225 came in for repair, I almost sent it back untouched. I decided to take the challenge and at least get it working again. Here are pictures of a stock 225 and a modded 225, in my work neatness counts, and original looks mean everything.

:yikes: HOLY MOLY !

Looks like a case of knowing enough to get yourself in trouble (previous upgrade, not you). Most likely you have seen my work, so you would see that something like that just turns my stomach. I will never understand why anyone would ever do half ass messy work. There is no justification, just laziness and/or stupidity. Ok, I've said my piece. I'll step off the soap box. Now back to our regular scheduled programmin.

The person that did those "mods" sure hasn't ever heard of the KISS formula, huh?
What was he thinking anyway? Sometimes a little knowledge is dangerous thing!
Thank goodness there are still people like you Terry, who can keep another classic going strong. Maybe you can install a padlock on the bottom, so no one can get in there and mess around with it again?

Looks can be decieving, it actually sounds good, found 2 bad capacitors, main filter was open (450V cap running at 430V), and the bias filter was swolen up and vented (50V BP). The mod man didn't take into account peak voltage on power up, the B+ can hit 490V and the bias -150V before the tubes warm up.
Oh well, a new line cord and some polish and it will be on it's way home soon.

About a year ago I saw a MC225 with this type of mod (it could be the same MC225) on Ebay. My first thought was wow a MC225 with modern parts and updates, I bet it sounds great and it will sell for less than a stock MC225. My second thought was if I buy this thing and it breaks how would I fix it? So I passed on it but I still wonder how it would sound in my system.

Terry,
It is long past April 1st. These can't be the same amp! Holly cow! I really can't believe anyone could have messed up a unit that much. Actually, there was some guy, I seem to remember on AA who was boasting how he was modding Mc gear and getting it to sound so much better. Hope this was not 1 of his. All I can say is this is the 1st time I've seen your work and it takes a lot to impress me and I'M IMPRESSED in spades. Previoucly I had told friends either send it to Mc of Audio Classsics and nowhere else but now I'm adding your name to that very short list. Not sure if it is a blessing or curse.
