Tweeter horn question

Hi speaker gurus, I've got a question that will probably be an easy one. I want to experiment with adding a high frequency horn on top of my 511Bs. The 511s cross at 500hz, so would it be as simple as hooking them up to that circuit via a capacitor? If so, what would be a good value to experiment with? The horns are small EVs with a 10 x 3.5 opening and EV Wolverine drivers MR19. I have no idea what the frequency range of this driver/horn setup is. Any advice is greatly appreciated (I don't want to fry a VC or something). Thanks, Jay

Threw in a couple pics for the heck of it.

Those are midrange drivers and horns.

FWIW I am currently using a pair of Radio Shack 40-1375 planar tweeters crossed over very high first order, with a variable L-pad as supertweeters of a sort with my Valencias. These are very sweet sounding tweeters with reasonable efficiency (much better sounding IMNHSO than the 40-1310 Foster bullet horn R/S "supertweeters"). Of course, there are many much better and much more expensive options!

511Bs will support VHF without beaming severely, if your compression driver can provide it.

Look to CD compensation to make it happen, active OR passive....

The ribbon tweeters will never produce enough SPL to keep up with the woofer and 511b drivers on Jay's all horn system.

I'm not familiar with the EV horns you have there, Jay, but Eminence makes some small horn tweeters, APT-150, that are pretty flat, and very efficient.

I would use a cap calculated for 8 ohms and 8000 hz, then an 8 ohm L-pad, leading to the APT-150.

They keep up with the drivers in my Valencias...

I didn't recommend the EV T-35 family of horn tweeters because thare singularly nasty sounding drivers. The Eminence horns are indeed worth considering, and they are not expensive.

Foster horns are also worth a thought, but the better ones ain't cheap...

Some ribbon tweets have close to 100dB sensitivity, I don't expect that they will have any trouble keeping up with the altecs. Most ribbons also will have similar dispersion patterns to a 511 horn making them somewhat easy to match.

If you can find them, these Selenium clones of the JBL 077/2405 are pretty hard to beat. I prefer this older discontinued aluminum style to the newer all plastic version, altho i can't say that i can hear a difference between them.

The older Coral Alnico horns are quite good also.
I used a pair with 8" Frazier woofers.
Xover at 4000Hz/6db....they pairing worked out quite well!
