Yamaha M Series Amp into 4 Ohms

Anyone have experience running Yamaha M-70 or M-80 into 4 Ohm Speakers?

I have a pair of KEF C80's that need a lot of power and looking at maybe a Yamaha to power them. Plan was to use my existing H/K 630 Twin Receiver as a Pre-Amp.

Thoughts on how they handle 4 Ohm speakers and if this is a decent idea?

Either would be fine running into 4 ohm but if they haven't been serviced they will need it before you can expect trouble free operation.

M/60 here and no problem running 8/4/2 ohm load. It's setup for such a load. Infinity RS 4B running as I type.

Bear in mind the selectors on the front panel only change the meter scale. They don't change how the amp operates in any other way.

M-80 should work without problem. It will get hot quickly though, so allow for enough cooling.

+1 on getting any Yamaha M series amp serviced. I bought an M85 a couple years back that wouldn't come out of protection mode, I didn't pay much for it, so I took a gamble. The tech I took it to said that it's real common on these amps for a cap, diode, or other inexpensive part to fail, and take out a long list of expensive parts. If I recall correctly just the parts to repair mine were something like $110. The tech wound up giving me what I had paid for it as a parts donor.

Yes . They do tend to create a lot of collateral damage. When the outputs go south. Probably my favorite amps to work on.
