Best Receivers (mid 70s to early 80s)

This one's an unorthodox design, but I love it. And it sounds amazing.

Mitsibishi DA-r20, or r25, or r30, etc. Really fine FM sections and good tape-tape duplication tools along with MC and MM phono input :)

For that period my votes are for:

Philips Lab Series, any model against competing units in their price and power range;
McIntosh 4100
Sony STR6200, 6065, 7065, 7800, V7 (6060, 6120 predate the period)
Sherwood SEL-300, 8900

I would list Tandberg but not sure as to the date ranges of their models so may make an error. Revox also made a received in that period but can not remember the model.

This is the last one I owned, (the only one I have a picture of). I wouldn't say it was spectacular. I will say there was something very nice about it (very musical, not fatiguing). Also I thought it was prettier than the 1900. Oh Karl thanks for sharing the Tele stuff (very nice looking, I suspect very well made). Sorry for some reason it wont upload pic, maybe I'll try again later. It was a Mac 1700

ok there in

The "Funken" were built very very well. :thmbsp:

Still today I saw one in a shop as heavy as a transatlantic ship!

WOW! Nice stuff that Mac!

Well, since nobody has mentioned these, I will. I think the Toshiba SA775 and the Pioneer SX3900 are the BEST of the bunch! Only because they are what I have. For disclosure purposes, I will admit I just grabbed these photos off of the internet, easier than taking pictures, but mine are in just as nice condition.

I always loved the look of my JVC R-S77, and my Daughter's R-S33. This 1980 lineup is one of their best looking in my opinion.
The 77 I've owned since new in 1980. The 33 I bought for my daughter's Christmas present last year.

While my favorite SS receivers are mainly built 1966-1973, there are later vintage units I cherish. As a rule, the 35-50 watts/channel class are my favorite happy medium between power and sound quality. Hands down, my favorite post 1975 receiver of all would be the McIntosh MAC 4100. I like better Sansuis, the Pioneers in the 50 series, the Hitachis, the better Luxmans, and quite a few others. I do tend to like units with mainly discrete outputs and conservative designs.
