'Winslow-Healy'? Anyone ever heard of it?

I once seen an ad for used pair of Winslow-Healy loudspeakers on a local forum. I've never heard of it before, so it stirs my curiosity a little. But what actually stirs my curiosity further is that I just failed to find any meaningful information regarding Winslow-Healy on the net. Google search mostly directs to youtube and ebay, and other sites like 2kmusic and mp3gum that doesn't give adequate description whatsoever. There is no review, no spec, and not even company website for Winslow-Healy. So, is it a legit brand, or another white van?

Anyway, here's an image I could find:

  2. I had the same thig happen with some speakers in an ad last week. Audio Plus, did a search and found nothing. Posted an inquiry on the Speakers forum and not one reply. Hope you have better luck.

At least Winslow-Healy sounds cool, with the hyphen and all.

There is not even a company website for Winslow Healy either.

Yup, the name sounds like "something". But of course, so do a lot of names of white van speakers. :D

Looks like just one ebay seller, "theaudiophilestore" out of Portland, Oregon.
Most of his other auctions are for not exactly audiophile Dayton stuff...

I see! It's probably the same seller who posted lots of Winslow-Healy stuff on ebay.

Doesn't automatically mean it's white van though; probably the seller is a DIYer who actually named Winslow, who's also partnered with another DIYer named Healy.

    Well I'm just being optimistic.

Winslow-Healy could have been a in-shop brand back in the day. Might be something good..

Well, I've been searching for anything, yet I failed to find any articles explaining about Winslow-Healy. At least we already knew Dahlton and Kirsch are white van brands. Winslow-Healy, on the other hand, is just... mysterious.

Same thing with my Fraziers. Saw them in a thrift shop, searched the web for over a month looking for information. Next to nothing found. There still is a Frazier loud speaker company, but on their web site they say they have no old parts or any information about what they use to make. Finally found information on the Klipsch site under F.U.G. (Frazier user group). Same thing with Beveridge speakers. It was a guy and his son who built them. I believe dad's dead and the son is a security guard in a nursing home out west.

So, it seems there's a chance that Winslow-Healy is actually legit.

    Or does it?

The only Winslow I've ever heard of is Winslow Burhoe of Burhoe/Genesis/EPI/Epicure. Probably not him. Nah. But if it was, I would expect good sound.

Actually, it looks like they (and the owner) are referenced in the book the Grateful Dead Gear. Dan Healy was a soundman with the Dead and helped create the Wall of Sound they used. Joe Winslow (who died last year) was on the Dead's crew. Apparently he made speaker cabinets. I'd buy them!!!!

Ah, very interesting indeed. So that's where the obscure and mysterious "Winslow-Healy" brand name came from.

I wonder why aren't there more articles/review covering the product. Also, are there any other brand name suffers from similar obscurity?

It looks like a DIY parts brand. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube from TheAudiophileStore. He has a bunch of videos on different models. But from looking at the cabinets, there is one that looks JUST LIKE a pre-made MDF cabinet one can get from Dayton Audio only with whatever drivers they chose. Nowadays, there are plenty of sources of pre-made cabinets, crossovers, drivers where one can literally throw together a relatively inexpensive, but good sounding pair of speakers and throw a logo on it. But generally, those companies don't last long because they aren't well funded and they can't get a big enough distribution.

If you don't mind having to get matched pair of replacement speakers should you blow one. There is no company to get replacement parts for it. What happens if you can't get replacement speakers? I'd kind of stay away from hole-in-the-wall companies that aren't currently in business, unless you have some extra cash to burn. I was be conned into buying a used pair of Duntech Sovereigns years ago by my local stereo dealer as they had a pair they got in on trade. Duntech went out of business a few years before they got the pair. Even though they are great speakers and still used as Mastering speakers in some high end mastering studios, I didn't have the room, didn't have enough power to drive them and didn't have an extra $4,000 burning a hole in my pocket. Plus I didn't want to get something from an out of business company out of fear of not getting replacement parts.

And the automotive "Healey" had an additonal "e".
