Pioneer CT-F500 slooooow...

I got a nice CT-500 for free on CL - looks like it's had very little use, but it is playing a little slow consistently.

Could this be belts? They seem a little loose but would that cause a consistently slow playback?

If so, any advice on replacing for this unit? Looks like I can get the motor off easily enough - no service manual though.

The first thing to do would be replace the belts, along with cleaning pinch rollers and heads as well as demagnetizing the heads. I'm not sure if there is a service manual in the Pioneer database for that one. I replaced them about 10 years ago, wasn't that hard.
Most of the belt kits on ebay come with instructional pages for dissasembly.
Very nice, simple decks with decent specs. I have 2 of them around, but don't use them anymore. Good luck with it.

Just a follow-up...

Replaced the belts (major P.I.A.) but still slow.

Found the servo adjustment on back of motor and used a jeweler's flat head screwdriver to dial it into proper speed (using a factory cassette and CD of same album)

Deck sounds great! Thanks for the help....

I would contact BOB at Vintage Electronics. He did a compleate service on my CT-F750 and that thing works like it's BRAND NEW! Changing the belts is a start but there are other adjustments that need to be made as well. The CT-500 was Pioneers "budget" cassette deck or the PL-12D of Cassette players in it's day. If properly working, it sounds every bit as good as my CT-F750!!!

Thanks- I will keep him in mind, although right now it sounds and performs great so probably no need - it seems to have very few hours on it.

I do wish I kept the CT-9191 that I found at a garage sale though....

Make sure that the speed adjustment pot inside the motor is treated with Caig DeoxIT. Often they get touchy and cause the speed to jump to different -- but fairly stable while they're there -- pitches. Put a tiny drop of Teflon lube on the motor bearing where the shaft enters the bushing behind the pulley. Do NOT use oil or WD-40.
