Apple Tv "Radio" App (not Itunes Radio)

The Radio App on apple tv. not the iTunes radio where you put in a song/artist and it'll generate a playlist, but the Radio app that plays real radio stations.

Anyways... Ive experimented with this App before and there's just too many stations to figure out whats good and whats not.

Anyone use this feature and can name some stations you like?

Im looking for a good college radio stations that'll play more modern versions of punk/pop punk/ska/ indie rock/ acoustic based rock stuff/singer song-writer/ instrumental/90's rock/pop/ indie pop/ good 80's rock (no hair metal)/maybe even some obscure classic rock/ etc...

music similar to artists like: streetlight manifesto/get up kids/red city radio/radiohead/counting crows/the lawrence arms/modest mouse/the menzingers/the killers/jimmy eat world/chuck ragan/gaslight anthem/frank turner/the cure/brand new/against me/strike anywhere/bruce springsteen

ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOMED THOUGH!

You have asked a great question. I stumbled on that app recently while trying to learn more about the ATV capabilities. Literally thousands of radio stations worldwide are listed as available. Gotta be something on that app for everyone to enjoy.

If you go into iTunes music but under the internet selection it steams radio station in different genres. One I like is under classic rock 3WK.COM Classic Undergroundradio Genre-shattering 60's/70's underground radio featuring an enormous catalogue and deep tracks from known and unknown artists.

i don't think enough people are familiar with Apple TV or the app on this forum to give suggestions. its a shame cause it seems like an awesome feature. could be a great way to discover new music.

I have Appletvs, but I prefer the iTunes Radio that has stations based on Artists I select. I have tried the radio section you are referring to, but it doesn't have the same level of flexibility.

I listen to it quite often. Not your genre, but two of my favs are under Blues>The Deep End and Jazz>The Penthouse. Love the back stories on Deep End and Penthouse plays a wide variety of jazz classics.

I'll have to check those out. I'll listen to Jazz while studying. Actaully had a guy at my local record shop pick me out a couple lps. He suggested maccans (first name escapes me right now). I enjoy jazz as background just know little about it

Thanks

Yet when I find a real radio station I like with a real human at the platter...it has way more personality and sensible segues than Apple's jukebox.

Not sure if this is on your app, but KCRW Eclectic 24 is a terrific station and a great way to discover new music.

I think whether "personality" is a good or bad thing depends on which human is at the platter.

When I want to listen to Amos Lee (as one example) combined with similar artists, I can easily pull up Artist radio, select Amos Lee, and "hits" and get that type of mix. Getting that type of mix from a radio station is not nearly as easy...which is what I meant by "it doesn't have the same level of flexibility".

Agreed. Hence why I noted "a station (human) you/I LIKE".

Finding the right analog soul is key. For me, that's notably part of the adventure... and payoff. As in only one (robot vs. human) can both literally & figuratively hold a candle to and tell you what a song looks & feels like to them. ;) heh...A tad extensional there but hopefully you get my drift. And yes, I did get what you meant by "flexibility".

It's indeed too "easy" these days to fashion a playout reel to upchuck similar songs based upon keenly pointed data points. And yes, some service's algorithms are better than others. Some are downright awful. In any event, it is a boon for quick party mixes and personal discovery. I love it....I choose the service/robot that I consider best and it's bloody great! For services rendered....on-demand smart jukes are worth every penny or freemium consideration. It continues to amaze me & on occasion blow me away on how far and good things have come on the robot front presently.

Yet, on it's best day...the "dataio" is still a moonshot away from what I consider great F'n radio. Here's a snip of what what I meant---

Last week, I played Perry Como's "It's a Good Day" next to a track by Death Cab for Cutie, and a few days ago, I played Dusty Springfield covering Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey" next to a new track from the up-and-coming U.K. band Temples. I played them together because I thought they'd sound cool, because I could -- that's a human brain in action, making a conscious choice. Can an algorithm make those connections? No, it probably can't.
hopefully you'll see fit to consume the entire post and appreciate the gist---it's dead nut on.--IMO. No brow beat intended; just trying to convey and source my point. :music:

Now..how great is that! Toss in a few live back-story comments and that is radio what algorithms can't touch.... by a long shot.

To me, real radio is about connecting the subliminal with the sublime. And while I do appreciate the ease and satisfaction I get from the robots..... there's just no bloody connection. It's fake it til you make it time.....so far it's fall = flat.
