HH Scott 299C

Hi everyone,

I would like to know what your favorite HH Scott integrated amplifier is? It seems like there are so many variations out there.

I recently got an HH Scott 299C and a matchnig 370 tuner. I got these through a trade. The 299C integrated amp looks just like the 299D in all the pictures I have seen online, it does not look like the 299C even though it says 299C:scratch2:

Could this be some kind of a later version?

The amp works, but I didn't play is very long since I don't want to risk it, since it should be restored first.

Anyway where does this amp stand in relations to other Scott tube gear and other tube amps such as Fisher, Dynaco, Pilot, Sansui, etc. All your opinions and experiences are greatly appreciated.:thmbsp:

That's helpful info John. My LK-72 has the circuitry of a LK-72B, but isn't labeled as such. It has smooth brown knobs and white (smoke yellow) switches across the top.

Hi everyone,

I have an LK-72 (first version chocolate brown) and a 222D.

The LK-72 is mellower to my ears and has a little bit more reserve of power (7591). The 222D is also sweet. Mind you that the speakers I use have a great impact on their sound: Monitor Audio Bronze BR-2 with the LK-72 and ADC 303 for the 222D.

I would say that the 299C is high on that list if not best in HH Scott integrated amplifiers. Just keep her original but restore her. New capacitors and resistors as needed and new tubes and biasing. Enjoy her classic sonics and beauty.

Craig (of NOS Valves) helped me out in my restore thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=288528

Starting around post #139 and beyond we were modding it. I did a silly simulation that didn't work, then tried building it and it was fine. :thmbsp: Made myself a 'close enough' quad of tubes and dialed them each in individually.

Good stuff!
I skimmed some of the thread. It's a lot to take in!
Did you ever make a schematic or post photos of the final pwr supply mod?

I have a 222C with a similar mod (I think, if I'm understanding you correctly):

There were 7 different variations of the 299C I believe. The last version looked like the 299Ds. Newer squarish faceplate and different knobs.

I own quite a few different Scott amps and the 299Cs are definitely some of my favorites.

medosmas: You have a 299A using EL84 power tubes. The 299C uses 7591 power tubes.

I only have one Scott integrated but also have a 340B receiver and a 130 pre. I love all three. They all share a similar sound. The 340B and 299C are both 7591 based but my 299C has a bit more punch, probably due to the larger output transformers.

HHscott house sound is very easy to live with
These old tube amp/integrated amps have great iron and produce sweet highs, excellent midrange and defined punchy bass, picking them up will tell the tail with their heft.Im always keeping an eye open locally for a 299 but they are very seldom seen in my area.My hhscott LK-150 /LC-21/LT-110 is used daily and is enjoyed immencely
