Interesting Sansui products on Yahoo-auction-japan

I guess I need to go read the rules again. I genuinely thought if I'm not linking anything or mentioning any sites or prices then I'm in the clear. Sorry.

It is important to read post #1 in this thread and the warning I gave in Interesting Sansui products on Yahoo-auction-japan

This thread is fine when it discusses interesting products. When we start talking about actual auctions currently on auction sites, we are skating too close to breaking rules... and risking this entire, very valuable thread.

Doug, if you're so worried about discussing auctions, maybe you should completely delete this thread and permanently ban any mention of auctions?
There are not many places left on the Net where passionate people discuss things they are interested in, and your actions further reduce the number of such places....

Discussing "hey, there is an auction for X over on Y right now" is not the point of this thread nor the point of the Sansui forum. You're welcome to start a thread in Dollars & Sense if you want to trade tips and heads up on items up for auction somewhere.

This thread is to share info about the interesting items found on auction sites... for the value of knowing such items exist.

If no one sees value in discussing that here and avoiding the "go, quick, have a look at what you might buy", then I'll delete this thread and prevent it from starting back up here in the Sansui forum.

Is there anyone here who wants to keep this thread, the value of discussing items found and not the auctions?

It seems to me that merely posting a picture of any such item is sufficient. By virtue of the title of this thread, if a picture of an item is posted, it is reasonable to infer that it is (or at least was) for sale on Yahoo Japan, and thereby potentially interested parties know where to search for it. This makes direct linking the auction superfluous (as well as being against the forum rules).

So, how about everyone posting in here stays inside the lines, so this thread doesn't get wiped. Is it really that much to ask? As has been pointed out, auction links can posted in D&S, or if you think a certain forum member would like a heads up, just PM them.

Dear Sansui friends,

As I started this thread I want to share my thoughts about this "discussion".
My intention with this thread is and was indeed the sharing of interesting Sansui equipment that we only can see on the Yahoo Auction Japan.
I understand it is really easy and innocent to refer to a certain auction. I did do this at times. And there is no intention to sell, just the -- hey, this certain member, you are probably / maybe interested -- so I understand the reaction, why can we not just talk about it.
But,
The rules are there not to make our experience less enjoyable.
I can imagine that without this rules some people will start an account just to sell there equipment or even other products and do this all over the place.
To prevent discussions about this there is one place where you can talk about value of equipment and auctions.
So, Please just keep it clean.
May be it is ok to make a thread in Dollars & Sense about an auction and paste a link in this thread?
Otherwise start a private conversation with 1 or more members about the auction.
I will admit I would have liked it of we could have just talked about the auctions how we want.

Patricio

I mean I'm perfectly fine with the rules the way the mods want to enforce them.

I was thinking that it'd be fun to have a Sansui/Luxman Buyee thread in the D&S forum but never ended up starting one. Anyone is free to do so of course.

A quick glance at the forum rules again -

AudioKarma Rules

Welcome to AudioKarma!

To help AK be a safe, fun place for everyone, we reserve the right to restrict and edit content and to refuse service to anyone.

The Basic Rules:
  • Be respectful and use common sense.
  • Don’t try circumventing the rules.
Specific Rules:
  1. Don’t insult others, or engage in name-calling.
  2. 'Thread-crapping' (meaning disrespecting the topic or intention of the thread or forum) is not allowed.
  3. 'Spamming' results in immediate and permanent banning.
  4. Post in the one best forum for your topic; one thread per topic, no duplicates.
  5. No political, religious, racist, sexist, pornographic or excessively profane content.
  6. Snobbery and reverse snobbery are equally not allowed.
  7. 'Trolling' (inciting controversies) and 'Crusading' (aggressive proselytizing of anything) are not allowed.
  8. Conflicts or gripes with other people or other forums do not belong on AK.
  9. All questions of value and links to auctions or ads belong in the Dollars and Sense forum.
  10. Only one account per user. If you have an account problem, contact an administrator.
Forum Rules:

Many forums have additional rules or guidelines posted at the top of their pages as ‘Sticky’ threads. Some forums, such as "New Gear", "Dollars and Sense" and "The Cutting Edge", have very strict rules. Please check each forum's 'Stickies' before posting. For questions PM the forum moderator.

Advertising:

No advertising of any kind (even give-aways) is permitted on AK except under these rules, which are strictly applied:
  • You cannot advertise or promote any business without pre-approval as an AK Vendor.
  • All ads or offers to sell, buy or trade anything must be in Barter Town.
  • Non-Subscribers cannot make offers to buy, sell or trade anywhere on AK.
Solicitations:
  • No solicitations, personal pleas or charitable requests of any kind are allowed, anywhere on the site, and don't reference ads elsewhere.
  • AK does not qualify or endorse any charity or personal cause, except those AK supports directly in the 'AK Charities & Christmas' forum.
Application:

Everything above applies to every aspect of AK: your avatar, user title, signature, content of posts, the chat room, visitor and private messages, and emails sent via AK. PMs and AK-emails remain private unless we receive a copy in a complaint. Links in posts are also covered, so in general you can't link to an ad for a business, a porn site, offensive material, or for the purpose of getting around someone's copyright.

All posted content is licensed to AK, for permanent use on this site. AK may restrict, edit or remove content at will. Posting anyone else's copyrighted material must fall within the copyright fair use rules. If the owner offers the content anywhere else for a charge, it cannot be re-posted in substance here. AK will not assist in violating a copyright, and will remove content upon receipt of a demand by anyone who can demonstrate actual ownership, without argument.

All rules are applied with common sense. If it's really intended to generate business, it's an ad. If it's a link to a funny ad for something not offered for sale on the internet, it's not. If a topic is so controversial that it draws many political responses, it's political. On the other hand, asking for prayers for a loved one isn't a religious controversy.

Moderation:

What may happen if you violate the rules?
  • Your post may be edited or removed.
  • Blatant or repeated violations can result in being suspended, or permanently banned.
The volunteer moderation staff does their very best to enforce these rules fairly. All questions on AK policy, moderation or staff members must be addressed via AK's Private Message function to a moderator or admin, and comments on moderation may never appear in the public boards.

Thanks for your cooperation and enjoy the forums!

My favorite is #2 where it states. ..... ""excessively" profane content is not allowed." The rule makers are allowing for some mildly profane content haha

I think where we crossed the line (again) here is #9 discussion of value. While no specific mention of cost was mentioned, that is likely where dlucy stepped in when I made a comment about it sold for a "very pretty penny".

Some of these rules are, in my opinion, an encumbrance to a flourishing forum. For instance if you post in thread "I am looking for XYZ outputs for this unobtanium JDM amp" and someone posts a "hey I have a few left over my project I could pass on to you" that is a violation. Or if you post in a thread "hey I am looking for a schematic for my CA-303" and you post that schematic that is a violation. Oddly if you post "where did you find those nice CNC'd feet for that SR-838" and you post a link to the vendor's website that is not a violation (because it is not self promotion, I assume).

The other challenge here is enforcement of forum rules which are at the discretion of the forum moderators. Often this enforcement can come across as inconsistent. These guys can't be everywhere at once. Mods are also tasked with enforcing the forum rules, not making them. So it is not on a forum mod to debate or change the rules. That kind of conversation can be facilitated to the AK owners privately, through a mod.

At the root of this I believe the intent here is to keep commercial activity out of the forum, which is fair. AK also wants to keep any documents isolated to digital docs forum, which I personally don't agree with, and have been given the opportunity to make my case to the forum owners.

This a great thread. Hope it lives on.

The AK rule about not discussing dollar value except in Dollars & Sense is strictly enforced, is reported daily by members, and all AK mods step in (not just the forum mod) to clean these out.

A risk with discussing value in a thread is the mod taking corrective action may just move the entire thread.

All members are welcome to their opinion. The AK rule, which all of you have read when you signed up, is there is no buying, selling, trading, offering for free… anywhere except the BT forums.

When I have had parts to offer others for whatever reason, I’ve reached out via DM and avoided breaking the rules about posting in the forums.

Recently, mods have petitioned for and gotten two new BT forums: one for offering items for free and another for selling items to benefit the entire community. (Read the sticky note at the top of your screen). This is the approved way to share parts to those who need.

The rules are the rules. You’re welcome to discuss and petition elsewhere and, if they change, those changed rules will be enforced here.

The owner of this site made a specific, clear directive that all such requests are to appear in Digital Docs. That directive cannot be misunderstood, so it gets enforced.

Others and you, specifically, have had you viewpoint offered to the owner. If that produces a change, I’ll be happy to follow whatever new direction we’re given and I would expect whatever change improves the value of our efforts for our community.

The other challenge here is enforcement of forum rules which are at the discretion of the forum moderators. Often this enforcement can come across as inconsistent. These guys can't be everywhere at once. Mods are also tasked with enforcing the forum rules, not making them.

Two things:

No AK member knows how much effort, daily, is required by volunteer mods to keep the forums clean, to keep out the spam, to deal with the problems of AI and ill-intentioned posters. We get to “see” all the issues and problems that hundreds of thousands of users causes and must be dealt with. The fact we all still get value from the forums and percentage-wise have almost zero noise to deal with is a testament to the dedication of the volunteers and the wisdom of the rules.

Many of the forums have a specific mod who does their best to watch all the posts. For a forum as popular as this one, it isn’t possible for one mod to watch all the incoming posts. The entire mod group watches for reports and takes action even when the forum has a dedicated moderator. The mods are humans, so you’ll see varying attention and responses at times.

All that said, this is the end of the discussion about what should or slid not be in this thread and the end of clarification about why mod action is taken here.

Discussing moderation is expressly against AK rules. Enough has been communicated here, in my opinion, to explain why we are considering moving or deleting this thread.

Any further posts about moderation here will be deleted.

This a great thread. Hope it lives on.

I agree this thread has great value and I want it to live on.

I’ve asked if anyone wants to keep this thread in exchange for agreeing to obey the AK rules, this forums rules, and the intent of this thread.

It will remain here, open for continued posts, until such time as the above is not followed.

Thank you for sharing your views and either continuing the intent of this thread or making your own, new thread in Dollars and Sense to pursue the desire to discuss actual auctions.

More from a German site, though I doubt it fits in the "interesting" section.

A Sansui CD-M710 CD-Player (actually a "6+1 Disc Multiple Automatic CD Changer"). Haven't seen that one yet elsewhere and there is none in our serial PDF list yet (on the pic, the serial isn't readable, else I would have submitted it).

Dang...3 posts in this thread within 24h by me... Today on the bay, a GT-X7000L, which seemed to be manufactured for Alfa Romeo. And whatever "under license from Staar S.A." from Bruxelles/Belgium means.
Sansui isn't visible on the front of the car radio, but only noticeable on the sticker on the bottom side.

It seems STAAR is originally a Belgian company from 1920, with a track record in making electronics. From 1965 onwards they were involved in cassette mechanisms.

Theophiel Staar filed a number of patents such as this one:
US4338644A - Magnetic tape cassettes provided with memory circuits for storing information - Google Patents

There's not much to find about the company online.
The source RadioMuseum says:

Appareils Automatiques Gustave Staar
108 Chaussee de Ninova, Bruxelles (ca. 1920)

Gustave Staar S.A.
566 Chaussée de Waterloo, Bruxelles (1949)
Rue Vanderstichelen 62-64, Bruxelles (1961)

Staar S.A.
19-21 Rue des Ateliers, B-1080 Bruxelles (1985)

Tourne-disques, enregistreurs.

Production en France sous licence : Stare (Star), Courbevoie
Production in Great Britain: Star Electronics Ltd., London

In 1965, Staar developed a slide-in cassette player mechanism for car radios. It was introduced in Japan in 1966.

In 1971, Staar had a joint-venture with Faraday (USA) for the development of a player for their "Cartrette", a mini-version of conventional 8-track cassettes.

Staar was represented in Japan by Philips Industrial Development & Consultant Co., Ltd. (1973, probably earlier).

A new version of the slide-in cassette player, "MP", was introduced in 1973 (with over 800k units built in 1973/1974) and succeeded by the "RS" mechnism in 1974.

On the bay, and I have no clue is this is post-Sansui stuff from China... with a bit of research I found youtube links from Vietnam showing innards:
(looking at the thin steel sheets, compared to old 2mm Japanese steel, I am now sure that this is 2000-stuff just with the Sansui brand=

@peterott, Staar SA developed and licensed the auto music search feature found in many cassette decks starting in the mid to late 80's (pressing FF or REW during playback would automatically find and start playback at the beginning of the next, or last song on the tape, respectively). Thus, most any cassette deck with this feature referenced the Staar, S.A. license, usually on the rear panel.
