I'm considering purchasing either a pair of JBL Studio 530's or the older Klipsch RB-5's . Which would you go with and why ? Compression horn or tractrix horn . Comments appreciated , thanks !

I suggest you to try and hear both pair.
Perhaps you can elaborate on your Room size, Power used, and Budget.
Music flavor and sound restrictions.
Both are Budget level speakers. With decent horns for the money.
Both have good resale, so if clean you can usually get your money back,
When it's time to get better ones.

Both speakers have compression driver horns and the Klipsch is tractrix. When I heard them the Klipsch had better bass response. The JBL sounded really good on the desktop. out in the room I thought the RB-5 was better. i heard them separately so that's about as detailed I would go.

There are several You Tube videos where individuals are ranting and raving how great the JbL's are . Since it's a suitable for desktop use I think I'll go with the Klipsch . Thanks

The amp I'm using is a 30 watt Niko , room size is 15x13 with 8ft ceiling .

A dealer I know refuses to stock the 500 series JBL's because of the poor build quality of the speaker enclosures. He says he can' t support the speakers because the enclosures resonate terribly and he is afraid they might eventually delaminate and start to separate. My favorite JBL's are the 4435 and the DD67000 from the past. . But they are totally different beasts. As to which horn is best for you that depends on the acoustical properties of your room. I always test a speakers response below the crossover frequency where the woofer is the producer of sound first. If they past that test then I move on to checking the full spectrum of sound the speaker reproduces. Normally I prefer Acoustic Suspension bass systems. I don't listen that loudly any more so FM distortion is usually not an issue.

The JBL is a in-efficient speaker so I would be concerned that the speakers could be easily driven into distortion on the bass frequencies. The Klipsch is more efficient but with both having small woofers I would be concerned that both will fall short. My rear speakers for the HT system roll off 50 hz and though I like the sound when that can become stereo speakers the lack of bass really leaves me disatisfied. My speakers are rated at 95 db 1 watt 1 meter which 9 db more than the JBL you are considering and there fore they seldom receive more than 10 watts even though they are rated at close to 70 watts. You would need close to 630 watts to match their capabilities.
