MLB 2026

Yeah I saw that this morning. The thing about pro & college sports managers is unlike us normal people, when they get fired they still get paid.

Cora will still receive $12 million dollars from the Red Sox.

I wouldn't be shedding too many tears if I was fired tomorrow and the company gave me a $12 million dollar severance package. I'd be volunteering for it! lol

It's way too early in the season to start talking about firing managers. The Red Sox could be in a totally different situation next week.

Remember your answer to me back on Thursday?

....... Looks like way too early just turned into "right about now" ;)

But, to be fair, I didn't think it'd be this soon either. I thought they'd at least give him till the end of May to see if he could turn things around

I guess we'll see what their plan is. It looks like Cora might not be unemployed long though as three teams are already eyeballing him for an immediate managerial position or possibly during the offseason:
  • Philadelphia Phillies
  • New York Mets
  • Houston Astros
The three teams looking at Cora are big-time operations with bigger payrolls than Boston. He was already one of the highest-paid coaches in baseball. He might just end-up with a big fat $12 million dollar parting gift from Beantown and walk into an even more lucrative contract.

There are also rumors he might be hired as a TV analyst or for a front office position. I guess we'll find out.

I thought the typical situation was that the hiring team would simply pick up the contract?

Will he be using his own pails and sticks or will the new team be supplying their own? Yes the sarcasm is strong in that statement but the Yankees fan in me will never forget. My wife and I still hurl insults at the TV whenever Altuve comes to bat.

Yes you are right, a new team would have to absorb some if he accepts a job by next year. That $12 million is guaranteed though from the Red Sox as part of his multi-year contract through 2027. If a team fires a manager before their contract is up, they are on the hook for the full amount excluding any bonuses unless there was some kind of "mitigation and offset" clause in the contract like James Franklin of Penn State had which required him to seek a new position and use that salary to offset Penn State's debt. Penn State was on the hook for $48 million dollars but after Franklin was hired by Virginia Tech he received a reduced $9 million settlement from PSU. So basically Franklin didn't lose a dime, just VT picked up a large part of the tab PSU owed. Franklin's contract went through 2031 which knocked the amount PSU owed after he found a new job quite a bit, but he had to find a new job.

Cora's contract was only through next year plus he just had a regular offset clause that doesn't require him to look for another job. So he doesn't even have to look or accept any job. He could just wait until after the 2027 season and receive the full $12 million. Then get a new job after that. He's basically in a win-win situation right now and doesn't have to consider any new jobs that wouldn't be super-lucrative. He was already the 2nd-highest paid manager in baseball. If he takes a new managerial position it would be hard to imagine it not being the biggest of all-time making him the highest-paid coach in baseball. Teams like the three looking at him are definitely capable of paying that much.

If he takes any job before the 2027 season, Boston would still owe him like $5-6 million and his new team would absorb the rest.

It depends on how bad he wants to work. If I were him I'd spend all of 2026-2027 kicking back with the family, collect the full $12 million from Boston and possibly find a new job in 2028. Heck he's only like 50 years old.

Cubs fan here. Cardinal fans you have 10 years left of the curse I put on them in 2015. Took so much crap from Cards fans who thought it was their god given right to give non stop crap to Cubs fans. Had no expectation of it working but so far so good. White Sox fans weren't any better so been enjoying their woes of truly sucking.

OK Whatever you say Steve. :)

Well after being painfully swept by the Mariners, the Cards have rebounded and won 5 straight now sweeping the Pirates in 4 and now have won game #1 of a three game series against the Dodgers 7-2 knocking them out of 1st place in the West.

The Cards now trail the Cubs by one game.

Not bad for a team that wasn't supposed to be very good at all this year.

Tomorrow night the Dodgers vs Cardinals will be on network TV (Fox) as the game of the week. Can they possibly make it 6 in a row?

It will be pretty-amazing if they can, especially against the Dodgers.

The Yankees are doing really well right now but it is a long season..

They have "good" problems..Cole, Rodan, and Volpe all coming off the IL and deciding just who to move where is going to be tough.

Well I'll tell you, FOX picked the right game to show as their game of the week tonight! The Cards won again in a nail-biter 3-2 over the Dodgers and now believe it or not... have the same record as the Dodgers at 20-13.

The only problem is those darn Cubbies keep winning too and are a game up at 21-12.

It's unbelieveable though that the Cards have turned out to be as good as they have been. There's still plenty of time for them to choke-out like they have for the past few years but they continue to over-achieve.

Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina were inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame this weekend and were both present in the dugout for these two wins against the Dodgers. It doesn't hurt to have two of the greatest players of all-time there with you. This young Cardinals team is starting to look like something special.

Birds on the bat!

And the Yankees keep on winning. Last night I told my wife "we're getting spoiled, I don't remember the last time they lost".

And since Caballero has been playing so well, the Yanks have decided to send Volpe to AAA now that he is off the IL.

And the tribute to John Sterling was just fantastic.

Right now there are 4 teams in the AL that are scorching hot based on their last 10 games:
  • Tampa Bay Rays 9-1
  • NY Yankees 8-2
  • KC Royals 8-2
  • Chicago White Sox 7-3

There are 4 hot teams in the NL:
  • Atlanta Braves 7-3
  • Philadelphia Phillies 7-3
  • Chicago Cubs 7-3
  • St. Louis Cardinals 7-3
The hottest division in MLB this year so far is the NL Central where all 5 teams are above .500

The worst AL team is the Angels 13-23
The worst NL team is the Mets 13-22

It should be noted that the Mets have the highest payroll in all of baseball this year. Just goes to prove that money can't always buy you success.

Yeah the Yankees are hot. They are the hottest team in the AL at 24-11.

The Braves are the hottest in the NL at 25-11.

The Cubbies are scorching right now. 9-1 in their last 10 games and looking invinceable at Wrigley.

The Cards beat the hot Padres in San Diego last night and are 8-2 in their last 10 games but just can't seem to gain on the blistering-hot baby bears who are starting to look a lot like the 2016 team that won the World Series!

The Yankees

Their respective run differentials are crazy. Dodgers too.

Well the Yankees put up a big goose-egg last night. The Brewers pitcher was lights out and tops out at 103!!

Max Fried had an uncharacteristically bad outing and 4th inning in particular where he gave up 4 runs. Some less-than-stelar fielding in that inning didn't help, either.

Maybe its time to come up with a better, uniform way to pad walls?? The Brewer's left-fielder smashed his knee on an un-padded part of a wall while making a sliding catch.

RIP Bobby Cox. :(

The Braves are looking pretty-good this year.

They are currently in 1st place in the East and tied with the Cubs for the best record in baseball at 27-13.

Annnnnd the Yankees dropped #3 in a row yesterday completing a sweep by the Brewers. The Yankee relief pitchers managed to hose the starter's good outings in 2 of them.
