Sony DVP-S9000ES and long time to read discs...

dVP-S9000ES owners...

I decided to start into SACD land with the Sony dVP-S9000ES. I know this is not a stand alone sacd player but I want to get into steps.

I have about 10 hybrid sacd/cd discs and I can read 6 of them but not all of them. I read the manual and set it to SACD, but keeps going back to CD mode. Also, it takes about 7 seconds to read the table of contents.

PC burned cds are not even readable. Regular store bought cds do play but again takes almost 8-10 seconds to read them.

1. Is it normal to take 7 seconds to read sacd/cd discs?
2. Is it normal to NOT read pc burned cd's?

In regular CD mode, I think this player is pretty good. I kind of sounds like my moded Denon DCD-1520 and perhaps slightly better overall.

wsjoe, I can tell you that this player will NOT play CD-Rs. I was told it was built during the peak of the fighting about copy-protection, so Sony specifically designed it so it would not play burned CDs.

Regarding the slow read times, that sounds like perhaps the laser is tired. But I'm just speculating. My player seems to take about 10-15 seconds to wake up after I turn it on, but then it reads CDs quickly, and has no trouble recognizing SACDs and playing them. (My player had the laser replaced just before I bought it.)

please time it

Riverrat,

Would you please do me a favor of timing how long it takes to read a hybrid or dual SACD/CD disc and regular CD (non CD-R)? Start timing as soon as a disc drawer goes in.

thanks

I had the same problem with my DVP-S9000ES

I had the same problem with my DVP-S9000ES--it wouldn't play the SACD layer on hybrid discs. I recalibrated the unit and havn't had a problem since. I'm not sure how long it takes to read the disc . . . maybe 10 seconds . . . in any event not long enough for me to have taken notice.

I tried the calibration and a couple of hybrid cd's played but not all of them. I think I will have to purchase that laser and try to put it in myself. But I have to admit that this is a great cd player. I think this has a like DTS mode transfer from the regular PCM of regulare cd players. I was always skeptical about multifunction players. I would love to try better ones some day like the ultimate SCD-1 or a step beter like the Marants 8260 or 8001.

9000es

You might consider a VSE mod to you 9K, the sound improvments are very significant. I am scraping an 8260 due to reliability and that my level 6 moded 9000ES absolutly KILLS an 8260... no comparison!

what specific opamps and clocks do they use? and which opamps do they replace and get rid of?

Im thinking of getting a sony DVP-S9000ES, are they all this problematic?

Mine isn't. But the previous owner was an electrical engineer who replaced the laser just before I bought it. Works flawlessly so far (about 8 months) at least the audio section which is all I use.

I had one from when they first came out until about six months ago. Issued it in several systems and never had a problem. It read SACD's and Hybrid SACD's just fine. Jim

My dad has a DVP-S9000ES and has experienced these problems with his. The hybrid SACDs are sort of hit and miss, but more often than not do not pick the SACD side. Dedicated SACDs are not a problem. The read time is very slow for all formats, as is that darned tray (as I have mentioned before...glacial). He has even had the unit sent back to Sony for servicing but still the problem persists. Also previously mentioned the player was specifically designed not too play burned cds. Too bad because the unit is extremely well built and sounds good with both redbook cds and SACDs.

Are you certain that it was the same model, as the DVP-S9000ES has been out for roughly 6-7 years?

Just bought a Sony DVP-S9000ES today for $50, has remote and manual. It has to be better than our old "maybe $50 brand-new Sony ? from Best Buy that's at least 10 years old. Going to hook it up and see how it sounds tonite. I will keep the old one tho for the CD-R's I make from my original songs (small home recording studio, using Cakewalk Sonar). The reviews for the DVP-S9000ES made me feel this will be an upgrade for movies and commercial CD's, we'll see. I'll try hooking it up with those 3 component cables to our TV this time I hope the picture will improve. We've always used the single yellow video cable before (it's a 65" Mitsubishi, another Craigs List item for $60 and it has worked great for the 3 months we've had it).

Update: This Sony DVP-S9000ES is great! I had been listening to a James Taylor CD extensively lately testing out my speakers (ADS M-12 and Advent Heritage towers) so knew what my old player Sony player sounded like. Wow! I thought that CD's pretty much sounded the same on all players. The details and soundstage are so much improved, best $50 spent yet. I put in a DVD (Shrek part 4) and the colors and the sound were beyond my expectations. I am running the aforementioned speakers and an Infinity PS-12 sub as well as a Klipsch C-5 center. We always had a little difficulty with the dialogue clarity before. I thought maybe the Klipsch wasn't the C-7 (with 8" woofers instead of my C-5's 6.5" woofers). No way, now everything is crisper in all speakers and we hear things little details we never heard before. I highly recommend this player. Keep your old one for burned discs though.

After watching a few movies (which look really good by the way), this player is a keeper. For music cd's it is phenomenal, I definitely hear a difference in sound quality. I have kept my old Sony ? model hooked up to play CDR's and when playing commercial cd's on both units the DVP-S9000ES is much better. I am by no means an "audiophile" having come into appreciating fine stereo equipment later in life (well actually I appreciated it just never owned them myself). Since the price was only $50 this thing was a bargain if only to listen to music with it.
