Subwoofers for Dummies or Subwoofers 101

libertycaps

Analogue "AAA" vinyl.
First question. Should i bother with a sub at all? (Running Klipsch Cornwall II's currently.)
Second Question: If yes, then what are some of the most "musical" powered 12" or 15" subwoofer models widely available w/o breaking the bank?
Third Question: Room placement?
Fourth: How best to make the connections for a single sub with 2 overhead speakers?

I'm sure this has been covered 1000x times, but my search came back unsatisfactory.

A dls 5000r for under a grand, even less when bought used. Is reviewed to be a musical sub. 600 wpc with low distortion.

Currently i use mine right behind me for movies. Awesome.

Mr. Caps.

A sub is a good idea no matter what speakers you have, limited only by space and perhaps budget.

Second: I sense that you mean commercial offerings? If so, I can't help you much because I build my own. If you "can" build your own, then a whole different world is open to you, as your money can go further and the quality goes way up.

Third: Room placement is a factor that I have repeatedly posted about. To save time, just do an AK search for: "Distributed Bass" and you'll be exposed to a lot about subwoofers in general and placement in particular.

Fourth: I would recommend more than a single sub (see #3 above).

Do the search, then come back with more questions.:thmbsp:

i was in the didnt think i needed a sub woofer boat. but after reading some things i tried encorperating a sub with my 2 chan audio and there is music i love it on like hard rock or some of the newer music like club dance music. and then when i listen to jazz and stuff ill just switch the amp to 2ch mode on my avr and it turns the sub off but im liking the sub more and more for not only movies.

I use a pair of subs with my Klipsch La scalas. They don't have the reach of your Cornwalls though. I will say that if you do decide you need a sub know that integrating that with your system is a serious undertaking. I would first explore what can be done with room placement to satisfy your need for bass.

By the way, have you considered using/testing a different amp?

Don't know all the particulars but I have found very good results with Hsu subs....I bought new but they show up from time to time elsewhere.I recommend the addition to your system.

If you can find a used Miller & Kreisel sub then go for it. I had the M&K V-125 and it was the most musical sub I have owned. If you want to go new then I would suggest HSU they have one under $400 shipped or for a little more money SVSound sub. Good luck get a sub you will never go back.
