Which P-mount: Digitrac 300, AT92E Shibata or Grado Black 8mz?

M97xe stylus is .02x.07. When you run this on the 92e body what do you do with the brush? Interesting idea I am thinking of giving it a try.

You're correct, of course. What I should have said was that the most-desirable styli are unavailable. They seem to be the same stylus assemblies from the AT92E family, but in fancy dress. Do you happen to know if that's true?

I have no idea.

You can lock it in the full upright position, or you can use it. However, if you lock it up and don't let it support itself on the record, it will increase the effective VTF by a bit more than half a gram. If your TT is adjustable, no problem.

Whatever you decide, be certain that the stylus is T4-P compatible.

I had a SL-5 for a while. I put the simple AT92ECD on it (under $25 online) and it sounded and performed wonderfully. If it were me, I'd give it a try. One might not ever even need the Shibata stylus, or it can always be upgraded later. The AT92ECD is, IMO, one of the most underrated cartridges out there and an absolute Pmount value.

I run brush down with no issues. The N97XE stylus works with a number of other Shure p-mount cartridges to include the M104/105/110/111 body.

Hmmm, what about a Shure M111HE for $145, in "perfect condition" with a new stylus?

If you are talking about the one on eBay, stay away from it. It does not have the correct stylus. Instead of the original hyperelliptical, it has a .4 x .7 "EJ" series biradial from another shure cartridge.

I am stunned by the continual generosity of this forum! I've got so many comments to sort out, and so many contributors to say "thank you!" to.

Well the Grado is now out of the running, due to a few comments about how picky they are about setup and thus not ideal for P-mount tables. I was not especially happy with the sound of the stock cartridge in any case.

I should have mentioned that I do own an AT311EP - is there a stylus upgrade for this? And I currently run a $18 AT3482P on another p-mount table I intend to sell (an SL-QD22) that sounds pretty darn good - is there a stylus upgrade for that?

I'm inclined to believe that the AT92 with a Shibata is my best choice for an AT cart. It would be great to have a 2nd cart for the hell of it, since they are so darn easy to swap out on a p-mount table, and I'd rather have something different from the AT. Could be the Digitrac 300 (some "meh" comments though...), could be a Shure, or maybe I'll have fun tracking down an older body that can take a nice SAS stylus.

Again, I'll need to sort through the comments again, sorry if I'm rambling. I want to respond to each suggestion in an intelligent and coherent manner. Might take a day or so for me to catch up. Again, THANK YOU!

The Digitrac 300 SE (Super Elliptical) was made by Ortofon and is OM30 equivalent. I've used the Digi 300 stylus but on an Orto OM cart body. Was my top MM before I went MC.

Haven't heard the AT w/ shibata but it gets a lot of good reviews.

The Shure is a 'goodun' too. Another good and reasonable choice for the M92 cart is this gem from LP Gear:

So I threw the stulus from my M97xE on my M92E and it sounds great. With the brush on, tracking is measured to be 2g. Sounds great, though. I really like it.

So I've ended up buying an AT-92E w Shibata stylus (they were out of stock for awhile, but a shipment just came in). I love my other AT carts but wanted to try something different, so I may well end up trying a Shure M92E with an M97xE stylus at some point down the road. But for now, I'll stick with the AT.

Yes I have the cartridge, but my SL-5 seems to need a new tonearm belt. I hope to have the table back from my tech by the end of the week, then I'll spin it up and report back. I'll also try out the AT3482 and Grado Black on it as well.

Any updates on this? I am currently in the midst of figuring out if I want to upgrade my AT90 or go with the Shure M92 with a M97 upgrade.

I've only listened to one LP with the AT-95E Shibata, and I can tell you that even though it is not broken in yet, it sounds fantastic. It helps that it's running through a Pat Fonte-recapped Advent 300, which has an excellent phono preamp.

I have not yet tried using the Grado Black or AT3482 on this table yet, and I've never heard an M92 on this table or any other table, so I cannot compare them. But I can confirm that this cart/stylus combo is terrific. $143 at LP Gear, I believe. Hope this helps.
