Why did the golden age of SS equipment end so quickly? (analysis please)

That was a lot of it.The last part of the Boomers-the 1957-64 models graduated college in the late 70s-early '80s, & started finding wives, making babies, building/buying houses...Suddenly, "Hi-Fi" just isn't quite as important in yr life when you have a shitload of bills & a rugrat or 2 to feed. Now, a lot of us are staring down the riflin's of 50, we're better shape financially-well, SOMEWHAT, anyway, now we have the time & dinero to relive the halcyon days when we lusted but couldn't buy...-Sandy G.
 
Could it also be the increased pace of everyday life and the simultaneous loss of attention span?

One thing we all seem to have in common is the fact that we really get into hearing music in the best way possible. Not hearing a few tunes on an iPod while walking or hearing a shelf system while dressing in the morning, but really reveling in great sound.

This is a great topic. There are loads of reasons pertaining to history, sociology, economics, and perhaps even psychology. And they are all valid.
 
For me, audio went to the backburner with the advent of video. When VCRs first came out, I recorded all kind of stuff off the air. Then when movies could be bought on videotape, I bought a ton of them. Watching ANY movies AT ANY TIME was heaven. If I wanted to watch Star Wars or Jaws, plunk it in the VCR. Plus large screen projectors from Kloss, Advent and Sony was the advent of the home theater. Then came laserdiscs and now DVDs. I hate to admit it, I still love watching new movies on a 100" screen with the subs shaking the room.

Meanwhile, audio was relegated to warped, scratched records. Using a good 250wpc amp just made the defects more pronounced and bothersome. I really did not get back into audio too much until CDs came out, but even then the sound was shrill and brittle, but at least no pops, clicks and rumble.

Tastes change, and i guess with my old age, i began to realize that music still had a good part in life, but now the electronics are very expensive and hard too find.
