Here goes the journey of rebuilding a 4400. Enjoy the ride, Anthony! :D

Two big boxes from Mouser and Digikey arrived today, containing a couple hundred parts for the restoration of a beautiful Marantz 4400. Here's a few pics and story - http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=431157.

This 4400 is a perfect example of the old saying "10 pounds of sh*t in a 5 pound bag". Make that 20 pounds of sh*t though. It's tight in there, doesn't come apart too easily. Lots of the boards have connections that allow you to just pull them right out, thankfully. But that convenience is negated by the relay board. More on that later. :D

Here's some pics of the first board I'm going to rebuild. Power supply, well done. Notice the heat damaged caps, those are the 10uF 350V caps for the scope. Main transistors are pretty baked too.

Here's the power supply, rebuilt. Cleaned up the old flux on the foil side of the board. Installed new MJE15032G transistors in place of the old, weak 2SD331. Small transistors were also replaced with Fairchild parts. New Panasonic FM/FC capacitors in the lower voltage parts, EB/ED for the high voltage scope PS caps. I also cleaned all the connector pins with Deoxit.

The new parts really opened the board up for better airflow. With these new high temp parts, I don't think this 4400 will be baking its own parts any longer.

The PS board comes out easily, just loosen the top connector, and the connector for the fuse board. A few screws hold the assembly to the chassis. Leave the PS out, you'll need the space to get to that relay board, that is if you're replacing the relays.

Looks like this is the same thing as I did on my 4400 not long ago......that's why!

I replaced the big white resistor also and put it a little bit apart from the board, so that it does not heat the caps above so much:


later, I put in a new poti and a new zener diode, also:


The 4400 is MUCH work.....and on mine, a strange worker was in there before....if you want to look at more pictures of my 4400 restoration, click here!

Here it is. I've been watching for this thread. :yes:

For those of you that didn't see the other thread; this receiver was working well on all aspects except the scope wouldn't come on.

Hopefully when the rebuild is complete we can see that beautiful blue scope in all its glory. :thmbsp:
 
Mmm scope goodness, people who don't have a scope need a scope , I keep trying to tell Ed he needs a scope.

That's the good thing about this 4400, it's completely original. I've been working on a few units that had been damaged by previous techs. Not fun to reverse the messes they make. :no:
 
Thanks for posting this and other threads on the 4400.

Picked one up a couple of years ago. Found in the attic of an estate sale. Cosmetically challenged but works. Needs to be serviced and would be worth it to have a competent individual do the work (not me). On the shelf until then. It is a monster and would be worth it.

Appreciate watching your work and sharing your experience.
 
More progress on the 4400, slow and steady.

First couple pics are access to the relay board. You will need to remove the power supply, amp board, and heatsink. Remember to mark the output transistors and take pics so you know how they go back in. Then remove the screws that hold the back panel to the chassis, and the screws that hold the speaker terminals to the back panel. Remove the 6 screws at the board edges, then figure out a way to desolder those 4 solder tabs that hold the terminals in (the ones over the relay solder joints). I haven't figured out how I'm gonna do it yet. :D

I should do some cleanup while I have all these boards out, dirty in there!

Third pic is the original filters. Next one is the ring terminal I installed to make way for the EPCOS 22000uF beauties in the last pic. I tinned the wires, and crimped them in the terminal for a tight mechanical connection, then filled the joint with solder. It's solid, and attractive. But I put a bit of heat shrink over the crimped part for a clean look.

It looks like it's really tight in their to work on. There never seems to be enough slack with the interconnect wires.

Is the large blue connector a edge connector for the amp pcb?

Heat the big eyelets that the speaker terminals are soldered into and gently pry the terminals off. This is a 4300, but the process is similar.

Did this to both my 4400s and saved hours of work.

Yep, both amp boards have 'em. I love these connectors. :smlove: Dolby board has one too.
