OK, so I posted a while back about Ohm omnidirectionals. Link here.
I was a little vague as to the circumstances, because I didn't fully understand them myself. I'll start at the beginning. A while back, I was in a nearby church for an event. While walking around, I noticed a large pair of speakers in a storage room. They were among boxes of books labeled "donation" and in fact had a post-it with "donation from ____"
I posted about it here, and then called the church. Told them I'd seen some "books" in a donation pile I was interested in, and asked if they had a thrift store, or how they disposed of donations like that. I thought it very clever to throw them off the scent by saying books instead of speakers.
They informed me that there was a rummage sale (annual event) coming up on Friday the 17th, starting at 9:30 AM. Hence the "complications; I had to wait for the rummage sale, assume they weren't going anywhere, and find a way to get there during work hours.
So the 17th rolls around. I'm having some work done on the place, so I just scheduled it for the 17th, giving me time to wander over to the rummage sale. Walked through the sale. No large speakers. Asked around. No one had seen them. Kept on climbing the chain of command, hoping for some insight. Best I got was "well the teachers had first pick yesterday....." damn.
As a last resort, I walked through the church (also a pre-school, so I took pains to avoid the childresn or getting tasered by some over-zealous security guard). Made my way back to the original storage room, and lo and behold, there they were! completely unmoved in the 2 weeks since I'd seen them.
I went back to the head of the sale. By this point, I assumed she'd bend me over on them - I'd asked her about them 5 or 6 times, and had gone to find them - she must know they're something good. As we were walking back, she says alternately "they're old, right?" and "some people collect these things...." I had no idea what to expect in terms of price. Would I be willing to pay $50? $150?
We get to the speakers, and she looks them over. "Do they work?" she asks. "Well, I don't know. I figure they seem pretty interesting, and in a worst case scenario I'm making a donation to a good cause." I respond.
She goes "well, how does $10 each sound?"
Doing my best to maintain a poker face, I say "well let's make it $30 for a good cause."
So they're mine. $30. Then I make the cardinal mistake in any score situation. I leave to go to work, because I'm already late and I have no way to get two 65 lb speakers back to my apartment with any semblance of timing for work. I ask her to hold them aside until tomorrow (Saturday) for me. I hope that we've established enough of a connection that she'll honor the agreement.
I go back the next day to find her (after running through the church to make sure the speakers are still present). As we're talking, the topic of my music taste comes up. "Oh, you collect records?" she says. "yeeessss......"
"Oh, well we have a bunch of those. Something like "the doors" and a number of those 70s bands. Are you interested in that at all?"
"yessssssss....." - at this point any attempt at a poker face is gone. she directs me down to the closet in the storage room. There, I find:

So I'd call it a good day. Listening to some minty, minty dead now.
Which brings me to the speakers themselves. They read Ohm Walsh 4. However, the pictures I've been able to find on the net have some controls on the back plate, with clamp interconnects. Mine have a blank plate, with two high end Banana Plug/screw clamps. In fact, they look an awful lot like this:

But I don't have the controls on the grill (canister?) either. And my grill (brown) covers the entire canister array down to the wood, vs. the 5 or the 5 upgrade which seems to have the canister array extend to the outer edge of the cabinet. There are two felt pieces on the canister, which I assume is to direct the sound forward (the speakers are labeled left and right, and the felt agrees with the labels).
I'll take some pictures and post them up. First impressions are that the left speaker is a little weak, and that so far my monitor audio RS6s are brighter, clearer, and have more bass. Plus, I live in a studio, and the Ohms are FRIKKIN HUGE! Update - I think the left speaker has some high frequency issues - really muddy compared to the right. I'll call Ohm and see what the situation is.
Anyway, any tips or advice is appreciated. I'll post pics asap. I really appreciate the advice to grab them, and the community in general. I will go back to the music now.
