Got this info from some Russian website that is apparently no longer around. It includes basic info on thousands of Japanese transistors. I have converted it all to a series of Word documents, with numbers grouped by the third most significant digit (i.e., one document will cover all the transistors whose numbers are from 2SD700 to 2SD799).

If you don't know already, Japanese transistors are numbered as such: 2SAxxxx and 2SBxxxx are all PNP devices, and the 2SCxxxx and 2SDxxxx are all NPN devices. The 2SA and 2SC lines are 'supposed' to be high-speed/wide-bandwidth devices, but there are many devices that break these rules in all categories, FYI. Additionally, on many parts, the '2S' prefix is omitted and is simply assumed.

The info given is just the basics:
1. The type (NPN or PNP, which you already know simply by looking at the part number).

2. The Vceo, or maximum collector-emitter voltage, in volts.

3. The Ic, or maximum continuous collector current, in amps. The notation is done in the European way, with a comma instead of a period. Thus, a transistor with a Ic of 10 amps will show 10,000 in this list. A transistor with a maximum current of 50mA will show 0,050 on this list. You get the idea.

4. Pc, or maximum collector power dissipation, in watts, also using the same notation with the comma instead of the period.

5. Beta, or 'B', which is supposed to be the minimum gain of the device. Normally this is given on a datasheet under specific conditions, but we'll have to take what we can get.

6. Ft, or unity gain frequency (or gain/bandwidth product), in MHz.

I wish the original author had included one last field...the device case style. Oh well...

You will find that the data is incomplete for some devices, and the field is either empty, or filled with zeros. You may also find errors. I never claimed this to be perfect, but I have corrected those errors I have found (but overall I have seen that the list is pretty well done, and amazingly free of errors). This list also seems to stop with devices from about 10 years or so ago, but devices from the mid-90's on are usually easy to find a data sheet for.

Thanks a ton for the post, now if I could only crack the Motorola code. There are two npn transistors on my 240's relay pcb sps439 and ss47 I googled for a few hours and came up short. I fixed the unit (bad rc time capacitor) but came could not find the transistor.

I am working on resurrecting a Pioneer SX 950 that I got in non operational/ partially disassembled state.

The transistors are on the main amp board. When I got it one side seemed original from what I could tell from pictures and the manual. The other side had all NTE devices that I have heard have a spotty reputation. My goal was to replace all the transistors so they at least matched side to side.

What transistors would you recommend for the pre / driver stages of an SX 950 ?

Everyone knows Glen is a great dude, but until you live about 35 minutes away, you can't really get the whole story. He has saved my ass, and my friends asses more than I'd like to admit. One of the best parts of AK is it got me introduced to this great guy. He has also taught me more than I ever thought I'd know about stuff like running a scope and distortion stuff. AK is a much better place because of Glen. :yes:
