Fisher Philharmonic II

I have the opportunity to purchase a Fisher Philharmonic II. (Circa 1962). The turntable does not work according to the owner who has owned this for 6 years. He wants $100. for the unit. Cosmetically it looks good. He describes it as "Antique Fisher Philharmonic stereo cabinet, AM/FM receiver with working transistor tubes (takes a couple minutes to warm up). Receives all local stations, sounds great. Bass and Treble controls. Phonograph needs repair, possibly just frayed wiring but I am not sure. Wooden cabinet has a couple of small dings, woven speaker housing covers have a few snags." Here are the pics. Advice appreciated!!!

I'd ask to have the owner audition it for you to verify its operational status. Even if it is working properly you'd still want to replace the electrolytic and coupling capacitors if you are planning on using it. Otherwise the cabinet appears to be in very good condition. I wouldn't worry too much about the turntable since its probably something like a Garrard AT-6 and you'd probably want to upgrade.

Recently there was another AK member looking at a Philharmonic from the previous year on this thread that you might want to read through. Pretty much everything said about that one would apply to the one you're interested in. Have fun and welcome to AK.
 
Personally I would not even mess with the original turntable. I am in the process of refurbishing a 1960 Fisher. One of the unresolved issues is what phonograph to drop in my console to replace the original Garrard 210. Candidates are a Garrard Zero 100, Zero 92, and a Dual 1237. All can be fitted by simply cutting a new mounting board to drop in.

Congratulations and welcome to the club. That's a cool looking console and the price was certainly right. I'd be interested in seeing a photo of that P-22 chassis whenever you get around to pulling it for cleanup and inspection.
