PLANAR model sr 2040 receiver????

I picked one up today, but cant find any info on this reciever. looks to be mid to late 70s solid state, made in japan. has front satelite and rear speaker outputs.

sticker on bottom reads "electrohome limited"....anyone have specs?

FWIW, 'Electrohome' was a Canadian electronics maker from the 40s thru the 90s: they licensed their brand name to Mitsubishi in 1984 so it's possible your receiver is a Mitsubishi product. It's somewhere to start looking, anyway.

Im not sure what CAM is, and are you asking for a pic? is there anyway to "ballpark" the power(watts) on it?

all I meant by my post was that I seen a similar receiver advertised for sale on CAM awhile back, and since I collect oddball pics of Electrohome gear I saved it.

Usually you can take the power draw in watts listed on the back data-plate and divide it by 4 to give you the wpc... sorta

I found a little more info on this reciever, I think it may have been an archived thread from audiokarma.

Anyways It said something like it was electrohome trying to break into the "hi-fi" arena, but the recievers never went into production, but some made there way into the employees homes when the program was scrapped(likely the economics of it werent there). Can anyone verify of expand on this.

Any other owners of planar recievers on here?


If this is true it would seem that this would be a very rare receiver, does that make it valuable, or is it too unknown to have any collector value?

I'm going to dig this thread up every once in awhile and hope someone in the know sees it

I purchased the Planar SR 2100 from a seller in London Canada. The unit is is stunning condition! Unfortunately, someone sprayed the tuning cap and the FM tuner was badly out of alignment. I have made some improvements to the tuners performance, but it could be better. This unit uses a 4-gang tuner. Electrohome imported the tuner module from a supplier in Japan.

In the 80's I noticed the tuner modules were being sold for $25 at a local electronics surplus store. I purchased two and and built a franken-stereo for the workshop. I kept the other tuner but finally tossed it out when we moved.

Judging from the power transformer and heavy heating sinking of the outputs I would guess its power output is in the 60 watt RMS range.

Planar made at least 2 models; a two and four channel unit. They were put together on the assembly line in Kitchener Ontario. During that time (circa 1973 to 1974) they were also building colour televisions in the same factory. Electrohome manufactured the circuit boards with the exception of the tuner. These receivers perfomed very well. My SR 2100 is a beautiful receiver with back lit blue dial and the dial lamps use a bayonet based bulb - easy to change.

Also during that time period Electrohome was distributing Marantz equipment through their distribution chain. In the engineering section of the company I saw many Marantz receivers disassembled. There was some speculation the Marantz circuits were being 'studied'.

Like I mentioned before, the project was cancelled and I do not know how many receivers were produced or made it to market.

Being 16 years old and chronically short of $ I was unable to afford one. At the time I would have gladly bought one of them.

Electrohome fell on hard times during the 80’s and all but went out of business in the early 90’s. They may have been able to compete with the Japanese, but the low priced electronics coming from China made the business unsustainable. They are nothing more than a nameplate today.

Planar 2040

I just picked one up a couple of weeks ago. I had never heard of the name before, but the price was right so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm very happy with it, it's a great looking receiver, very good workmanship. I am using it with a pair of Advent floor speakers. The sound is very rich. Don't need to use the loudness switch for bass, it cranks out more bass than anything else I have, even beats my 200 watt Pioneer. However, the high end sound could be better, I have to turn the treble switch up about half way (for my taste anyways).
I wish I could find more info on them, I understand they are very rare.

Somewhere on AK, it says the 2040 is 20 watts. A few months ago, I picked up an Electrohome CS 400. I like it a lot, but needs some work. It seems to me to be identical to the SR 2040, except for the front plate. There's a thread here, with nudie. http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=429542

Last week, I picked up the TOTL Planar SR 2100(!) Threads on AK compare it to high end Pioneers and Sansuis. I wouldn't know, but I DO like this one.

Anyway, Google search shows that the Electrohome archives wound up at the University of Waterloo, about 60 miles from me. I hope to get access, and see if I can't copy some owner's and service info. If I'm able, I'll try to post some pics, or pdfs.

I bought a Planar 2040 receiver new around 1977. It came with its individual test curve! 20W RMS x 4 with <0.5% THD 20-20kHz fully driven if memory serves me correctly. Only had it for <6 months when it was stolen while vacationing. It handled 3 formats-CD4, SQ & another (Japanese? QS?). Weighed around 50 lbs. with a huge toroidal transformer & big smoothing capacitors. I also had Electrovoice and Sanyo SQ amps. I had around 40 assorted Quad LPs, my turntable tone arm had a CD4 compatible cartridge, & I also had a joystick sound positioner. I built my 4 tower speakers using Philips drivers-8" bass & passive woofers, 3"? mids and 1" tweeters & custom crossovers. I think that I paid around $200 for the Planar, which entered the market too late to succeed.
