Speaker Measurement Thread

SoundEasy

The software is a full-blown loudspeaker design suite. The measurement module is EasyLab. Fire up the Spectrum Analyzer (RTA), set the parameters, and run:

Uh, no, apparently. Won't read above 5512.5 Hz; not a good start. Now to figure out if M-Pro or SE is the issue. Pffft.... :(

O.K., let's see if M-Pro works in HOLMImpulse.

Hang on, now, requires Microsoft .NET Framework. ;)

WAIT! Just the installer is 2.58 MB; program's 53 MB.

Overnight on dialup here.

Funky. I've never used the RTA in SoundEasy/Easylab. I generally run measurements with MLS. I might have to fire it up and see what I can see.
 
I've been playing around with holmimpulse and struggling with making it work well. It's got to be something simple i'm overlooking...

I have ran the RTA and MLS in easylab and got full spectrum.

This machine is a desktop and I am using the M-Audio Delta 410, A Miles Audio 45 wpc amp. Just trying to get a grip on the amount of info in the guide.:sigh:

I guess I should have posted pics of them. My shop does not have an internet connection at this point except wireless and I really do not like wireless.:no:

Hardwire for me. Time to get out the thumbdrive.:yes:

Skywave says he got similar results but some setting change made the RTA work. For me, RTA is the starting gate and I used it to see if the M-Pro was getting in O.K.

Now that I know that part is working as hardware, I'll probe SE more comprehensively. The quick MLS seems like what to try next.

Need another mic stand; I'm doing this in my office rather than ZilchLab.

HOLMImpulse does seem to have some quirks which I don't yet understand, so I need to read up the threads over on DIY Audio, but for what many here want to be able to do, it may be the easy ticket.

It's a full-blown professional engineering development package, and the documentation is structured accordingly. SoundEasy is Zaph's preferred system, and Augerpro appears to have it down.

CLIO's similarly complex, and now, several years into using it, there's still plenty I have never explored. These systems are decidedly not for the casual user. You can get a PhD in this stuff, very likely.... :yes:

On bottom left I see 6k with pink noise selected. I can't remember what's below that. Could the limitation be easy as that?

In EAsyLab there is a great widget for getting your floor bounce and reflections gated out without too much bs. I think you input your closest distance to reflection 1. Enter that into the MLS parameters and you're gated...IIRC.:scratch2:

I may have to buy a separate windows laptop to run this horseshit. Parallels blows. Fuzzmeasure Rules.

Yup, that's it. You also have to set your arrival time in the time domain window but that's just clicking on a spot just before the impulse.
 
I think it's the levels on my mic preamp that are causing me problems. I can't get anything but a 30 degree angle upwards.

Keith did a technical summary of different measurement methodologies a couple of years back; I'll try and track it down. Ask him where that's posted next time you speak with him, maybe.... :dunno:
 
Update:

I discovered that the ZilchLab computer has Office 2000 on it just as you remembered and am running PCD. It works, but has glitches running on this platform which I'm working through with Bagby. I was able to get the eWave crossover in and accurately modeled. I can't get it to save sessions correctly, though, so I have to re-enter the whole works manually if I exit the program, a PITA loading in the measured ZMA impedance (from WT2) and FRD response (from CLIO, with the header stripped) data for both drivers each time. Also, the program has no facility for handling CD horns/waveguides in the directivity features. Geddes's SPEAK software is now free on his website, which he says will model lobes and nulls, but I haven't looked at that.

Pete B and Ken Kantor are looking at the cheap in-line phantom powered USB preamps. Pete has discovered that the one he bought doesn't have sufficient front-end attenuation to permit nearfield measurements without overloading, but that may be because he wants to maintain max S/N ratio and plays the DUT at high SPL.

Cranked up HOLMImpulse again to show WiredGuy on Sunday, and it worked slam-dunk with the Fast Track Pro USB preamp. The HOLM thread tells how to convert its files to FRD format, and WT2 exports ZMA directly, so I'm just a few experiments away from having a bottom-feeder package working here. Chris has WT3, a Dayton mic, and a Mackie mixer, so we're going to make that work, as well. PE is recommending the little Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer (502 doesn't have phantom power?) as an inexpensive phantom-powered interface....
