Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

I've got big EV front loaded horns and big JBL 4530 cabs in my big room just taking up space. After I get rid of them, I will get the OblaWaves in there and measure them.
 
Question about dust caps and HF response

I have a question about how dust cap size affects HF performance in a woofer. I've just refoamed 6 DQ-10 woofers and 2 Large Advent woofers. They're identical except for the dust cap. The DQ-10 woofer has a dust cap about 1" larger than the Advent. The Advent woofer makes a very good ewave driver. I'm wondering if the Dahlquist version's larger dust cap would prevent it from having the same top end response. Dahlquist only runs them up to about 500 hz or so.
Any ideas from our woofer experts?
 
After reading the Loudspeaker cookbook It talked about this and yes I would think the larger the dust cap the more it would have that effect. It says the HF is radiated from the cone to VC former area so the farther you move away the less there is. Also when I was reading that part it brought to mind a dual cone or "wizzer". They are attached directly to the former.

OLA Ewaves done!

I finished my Advent Ewaves this past weekend!

For those of you sitting on the fence about this due to the fact that you're intimidated regarding building a crossover; it's easy thanks to Zilch, Jackgiff and everyone else that contributed.

Just print the provided parts list & get the ZilchLab board (which is labeled); take part R2 and place on the R2 outline on the board and so on.

It's simple; for those hesitant about soldering, it's easy - look on youtube for demos.

They sound fantastic!!!!:banana:

Nice work. Ewaved Advents FTW! I see you repurposed the grilles. I managed to re-use the plastic edge trim by notching it out to clear the edge of the waveguide.

I measured the dust caps. The Masonite Advent woofer has a 2" one and the DQ-10's is 2.5"
Looking at PeteB's site I see that the metal frame Advent woofer had a 2.25" dustcap.
Maybe the larger dust cap won't have any effect at around 1600 hz.

Or you could just remove both dustcaps and DIY some phase plugs.

Interesting idea. These are for sealed cabs, so removing the dust cap would un-seal them. Also, the geometry of phase plugs is beyond me. I can fabricate just about anything, but developing an acoustic modification from scratch is a bit beyond my simple measurement capabilities.

The trim on my speakers was hard plastic and I tried to notch them.

I may try to get them done in the future; I had some gasket tape that was the right thickness so I used that and it worked out nicely.

I was facing some pressure regarding their appearance (WAF) so I wanted to get them covered quickly!

I bought the material at Walmart for $3; I didn't think it work work but it turned out nicely.

Cool! I'm glad someone was inspired. There was a question from someone here about grille cloth. Yours looks dead stock. maybe share with us where in Walmart you found it.
I notched out my plastic bezel rims by grinding them away with an ordinary bench grinder. It cuts fast. I ground it close to the finished size then used a wood rasp to clean up the edges and get a good final fit. It was pretty easy.
 
We have a Walmart here that has a fabric department; I just looked around until I found a material that was close to the original color and looked like the sound would not be affected by the density.

I have no idea what it was called.
 
Large Advent Econowave 101?

Thanks to all of y'all for the great thread here. With the plethora of information, guides and input, this project was almost easy, even for a greenhorn such as myself.
I still have some cosmetics to finish but the speakers are functioning in a manner that is very impressive even given the expectations generated by this thread.
Anyway, here's some pics:
didn't see 101 and 102 had already been posted. Title should be Large Advent Econowave 103? Not as catchy though.

It depends on the design of the woofer, to some extent. If there's voice coil former ventilation then it's naturally more of a concern. When the air has to pass through the gap or spider, it's sufficiently damped enough to be a non-issue. If the pole is vented, then the phase plug must make a good seal to the top of the pole. As far as the geometry of it goes, if you basically follow the designs of most other phase plugs (rounding to a bullet nose) you should be AOK.
 
How much SS power are you guys using with your Ewaves to get the dynamics and sound you like? I realize it will depend some of your woofer/XO choice. Thanks! :thmbsp:
