Got one in with leaky main power-supply caps. The 2285B uses those damn dual caps...6800uf 63V x 2 in each housing. I thought there'd be room to replace with four small caps, and found some Nippon Chemi-Con 6800uf 63V snap-in caps that measured 25.4mm x 50mm. Found some 25mm cap clamps, and fabricated a new base plate & wired it all up. Was a hellova lot more work than I make it sound... They just barely fit.

I'd rather not tackle this again any time soon.

I always wondered if having two separate power supplies is really worth when the transformer and caps are so close physically...meaning built into one physical unit. I always thought a big part of mono blocks was the physical separation. With the stock dual supply there is no physical separation.... You have improved that....

Sure, but the 2285B comes apart fairly easily...amp section just lifts out. The hard part was fabbing the new plate to mount the new caps onto.

I see the antique radio guys sometimes pull the guts out of the old cap cans and insert the new caps into it. Have you ever tried that? Do you think the two new caps would fit in the old case?

Nope...would not fit...wasn't an option.

Edit: 2-year later hindsight...I was only thinking of fitting them inside the old enclosure side-by-side. But, mounted one on top of the other, it can be done. See here: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=281050

There are 6800µf & 8200µf 63V caps measuring 35mm dia. x 35mm & 40mm in height that would fit inside in a stacked configuration (Mouser & Digikey).

How's your luck been with the mod to the snap in's ends ?
I've done a few and was just wondering what others' experiences have been .

I have some very short caps that stack up to be roughly the same size as the original cans. It has been done by another AKer...

I still need to do some servicing on mine. My enthusiasm for recapping it myself has waned somewhat. It still works fine but would like to get it serviced without paying out the yin yang.
 
Oh by the way... That is some of the nicest soldering I have seen in years... I used to work for an avionics firm...as you can imagine soldering quality was very important to our product.... You have the right heat, right fillet...especially on the harder to solder grounding lug. Only thing you lost points for is the flux.... Do you use a magnifying glass/light while soldering?

Couldn't get in there to clean the flux...buried too much. This Kester flux won't hurt a thing.

I have one of those 3 diopter lamps with a built-in round fluorescent bulb...indispensable.

I had to do the snap-in adaptation myself awhile back , did the same as you and just wanted to see if you like the way it turned out . I've not had a problem yet , in fact worked out to be pretty nice .

Any way like what you did for the Marantz . Hope I can do it as good when the time comes .

Well you have the right tools, the right lighting and the right soldering skills.....besides all the other Audio skills you have.....:thmbsp:

This level of craftsmanship is slowly being lost in the US....shame on us.
