Look what followed me home! a NEW speaker project

Purchased a DIY kit from PE and it arrived today.

http://www.parts-express.com/projectshowcase/indexn.cfm?project=Encore

Is the standard PE "Encore" save for the fact that I splurged on a pair of nice Morel drivers which caused me to need to open the pre-cut woofer opening approx 1/4 all the way around to house the morel as the 6" dayton reference woofer the kit typically sells with was significantly smaller.
I stuck with the dayton reference 1 1/8" aluminum tweeter.
The worst drawback of me changing 6" drivers is that the magnetic grills are going to take some re-engineering to clear the morels.

Unfortunately PE sent me an incorrect air coil inductor, I was supposed to receive a pair of 1.5mh for my XO's and instead PE sent out a pair of .05mh inductors?
I called them and they are going to next day me the proper inductors.
All 6 of the other inductors in the set are correct but save these two.

I hope to actually document how easy it is to DIY your own loudspeaker from a kit here, as well as document my findings or opinions on this kit.
So Far it seems really nice.

Couple of shots of the cabs..including the re-scroll sawed baffle before it finished being sanded out.
Seems real nice for the price

Hi, Tal. Interesting project. I'll be watching it.

The fuzziness in most of your pictures looks like a focus problem, rather than camera shake. When you make your photos, try to get a sharp edge more or less in the center of the shot. It gives the camera, in this case your Blackberry, something to focus on. A couple of your shots were quite sharp and in those, there was usually an edge. :thmbsp:

Thanks for the post. I have been eyeing those speakers as well, looking for something to run with a sub I have been working on (twin Apex, Jr. drivers). I look forward to your listening impressions.

My contact at PE was more than happy to accomodate substitutions like the morels instead of the daytons in the 'KIT'

I assume from the pictures that you're doing the sealed version. Correct?

Was the Morel a drop in (other than baffle mod) replacement or did they have to do an alternate crossover?

Yes they are only offered in a sealed version thru PE.

Supposed to be a straight drop-in (guess I'll see)

Those should be impressive when you are done. Can't wait to see more documentation and your review when you are done.

Best wishes,
Boonaroo

Did you get the last pair of cabinets? PEW shows them as NLA, discontinued.

Nope, I was told that the web has just not been updated (reliable source within PE) this was BEFORE I even ordered a pair.
I spoke to my account rep and ordered directly over the phone as what I wanted couldn't be handled over the web anyway as I wanted to modify the kit.
They DO have them (or did late last week)

Hopefully PE nextday aired me my 1.5mh inductors like they said they would and I will have a little time tomorrow, had very little free time today but i did:
Finish installing acoustic foam, internals wiring, install upgraded binding posts, and fix tweeter XO's to the cabinets today, heres a couple of crummy shots..
Hope to finish them up tomorrow UPS/PE and time permitting!

guess i need to do a search of indignia!

SOB!
I slipped through the cracks at PE and there will be no 1.5mh inductors for me for the day but I have been assured that I will have them to finish this project tomorrow.

This is a direct link to order the full kit, that will confirm that the are not a deactivated product, they must have just decided to sell them as a kit here:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=302-962
I was told that the webstore is incorrect and I am sure it is,.. because it said the same thing then when I ordered, that it does now "out of stock" NOT!

The kits are cool and I'm not trying to be an ass but are these really any better then getting a nice set of EPI100's or something like that and restoring them? You would have less work / money in them and I would have to think they would sound every bit as good. I personally could never spend $350 on a kit when there are a lot of amazing vintage speakers in that range. These for instance cost me $20 and about $10 worth of foam and a night to get them 100% and they sound fantastic.

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=197712

I'm just trying to understand buying these kits is all.

Thanks.

Cuz' I WANTED to..

Yeah, but I'm all vintage speakered out..

Had and parted with the JBL 4311's, EPI 100's, AR94's, JBL 100t's, HPM's, polk 10's ect, ect.. more than I can probably even recall right now.

Other than the vandersteens, all of my regular, daily use speakers are smaller driver modern MTM designs, they just seem to suit me better.

I 'personally' feel that while vintage electronics are great, I'll leave the vintage speaks to someone else who appriciates them more than I.
I wanted a NEW, high quality, SMALL set of speakers and I LIKE to get my hands dirty.

If I just wanted an older fix-me up I could go buy the damaged cabinet titans or the energy 4.1e's from a local shop just up the street that has some vintage speaks, probably both for less than $80 and fix them up, but I have done that so many times that the allure just wasn't there, I wanted to CREATE something.
In truth,... it would have been smartest to just invest in upgrading XO components on some of the great speakers I own already, but I never claimed to be rational.

Cool, thanks. :thmbsp:

Kits also give the owner a bit of pride in that they were involved with building them.
(Used to have that whenever I built Heathkit or Knight Kit products.)

i can feel you brother , thats about where i am at now , i feel that i would rather try to build something from scratch than rebuild something just for feeling that I DID THAT . your project looks great . good luck with it !

Well, as I am waiting until tomorrow for PE to deliver my inductors, as is NOT seen in the second picture, where my thumb is
there was very little to do other than mount the drivers in the baffles.
As can be seen in the last picture my pair is waiting patiently for the UPS man tomorrow..
