Garage sale find (aka look at my new Thorens TD-124)

The Healer
This morning on the way home from school, I decided to stop at a garage sale. I was looking at a couple of older crappy realistic turntables when the owner of the house said he had some more but didnt have time to get them down from the shelves. About then, I spotted a Sansui G-5500 reciever on the same shelf. He didn't want to sell that, but he said something to the effect of "I want to keep that, but I have an old cast iron turntable. It's made in sweden...*climbs ladder*...it's a Thorens. It doesn't work, but I'll sell it to you cheap. 5.00"

Not knowing anything about them other then they are a respected name, I agreed to the price and headed home. Got it home, cleaned it up and found it was a Thorens TD-124.

Some pics if interested.

Not working currently. There are a couple of caps underneath that probably need to be replaced because it looks like it's in good condition otherwise.

Wow! You did really well with that.

If it were mine i'd get some advice from the experts on how best to ressurect it. Those old Thorens TD-125s are very much sought after and can (if given the right TLC) be an extremely nice turntable when restored correctly.

There's a fella over at www.theanalogdept.com called USER510 who is somewhat of an expert on these. He can give you pretty much all the info you need on it.

Enjoy that baby. I know I would. :)

WOW 5 bucks reminds me of the time when a friend of mines uncle passed away and family was getting rid of his stuff asked my friend and me to see if we wanted any of the uncle's stuff
before they sold it at a garage sale, wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllll I still kick myself every time i think of this as i could've gotten a freebie 124 but in those days i wasn't much in to audio and some where some one is enjoying my lack of sense Duh...................

Take good care of her and I bet she'll give you many hours of musical enjoyment.

Good Luck

Stanton.
