my first ewave has begun

Here are some pics of my first ewave attempt that are in the process of a build.
Components used are a set of Barzilay cabinets(getting a lot of reinforcement and bracing), a set of cts 15" woofers(very likely to be reconed by our very own gordonw), and the standard ewave xover/horn set up posted by jack giff and zilch and others. I have experimented with the pyle horn and the selenium h25 horn. I am not certain which will be used.

I have a couple of questions for you folks. In the pic of the xover, are the inductors placed correctly? I have seen many xovers where one inductor is turned on its edge and 90 degrees to the other - should that be done here?

Secondly, the power resistors are resting on wood - I would think there should be space between the resistor and the wood. I am concerned about the heat from hte resistor and a fire - am I nuts? If a space is needed how would you provide it and stil mount the resistor?

Lastly, don't look at the cap on the far right. It is just for layout; the correct cap is on back order from PE. Also, the cabinets will be refinished and there wil be new baffles cut before this is completed.

Before I get down to the cutting and mounting on the xover and cabinets are there any suggestions for changes or mods?

1) Face mount the waveguide. There will be significant diffraction issues the way you show it. If you want flush, recess the flange only.

2) Inductors are fine, them being more than 3" apart.

3) Is that an electrolytic cap on the left? Non-polar? What value?

4) The resistors are not going to get that hot unless you're using the system at high SPL for sound reinforcement. Put a strip of sheet metal under them, if heat's a concern.... :yes:

Yep, that is an electrolytic. I am using it strictly for the placement/sizing. It is NOT the cap that will be going into the xover. The correct cap is on order from PE and will be here in about a week. The cap in the pic is a 30uf 500v critter. I need a 24uf ~400 volt critter. I think they will be roughly the same size.

Thanks for the heads up on the tweeter mounting - I had over looked that.

I will surface mount the drivers too.
 
Woofer's probably O.K. rear mounted. Try it both ways. The only way I can tell which is better is by measuring where the inverse null falls, defining the forward axis, once the full system is running.... :dunno:
 
Here is the first crossover almost complete. If I had the last cap it would be done.

Well folks, I have put a fair amount of time into developing these. there is some good and some bad here. The bad, the current set of barzilay cabinets taht I have are just too flimsy for this woofer. They are 5/8" particle board and resonate like a bell. I have experimented and reducd it a lot, but I think it will never quite be what I want.

Now the good,
I found another set of barzilay cabinets - just cabinets. They are pristine and made from 3/4" ? I think particle board but I will be going out to see/get them in a bit. They had an altec woofer so I am kind of excited these might be the cabinet I need.

Particle board is a good material with respect to resonance damping; it's what we had before MDF. My Paragon is made of it, actually.

In cases where we're replacing a rear-mounted front baffle and the rear panel is removable, it's essential that the braces be removable, as well, to be able to get the front out easily.... :yes:
 
I am home with the new cabinets. I will post pics in a bit.
Ther is a bit of a story with these too.

As some of you may rmeber I posted in D&S about some RCA thaeater speaekrs. Well, the guy I got these cabs from actually wound up with those RCA speaekrs. Paid $4k for em. Man are those ginormous. Bigger than some cars I have owned.

You guys are killing me!

Feels like I'm the only guy that can't even find Barizlay cabs for sale, much less for reasonable money.:tears:
