Deal of the Century?

Just picked up some Carver AL III Plus speakers, HK reciever, Infinity sub, and Kenwood CD player for $50. Everything works on the Carvers, but the downside is: I don't have anything in the house with enough cohones to really power these 6' giants.

What will I need 250+ wpc? Does anyone have any info on these?

I believe the minimum recommended is 65 wpc, however, there are alot of people that say you need 150+ for anything more than moderate volume. Considering the deal you got on them, I would take the money you just saved on some awesome speakers and buy an appropriate BIG amp.

If you EVER decide you don't want those speakers.... I DO!!!

They are akin to the Amazing Silvers that I have, a newer incantation if you will with a different low bass solution.

To be honest, those speakers want a monster amp but will "play" with something smaller. I have my Silver's hooked up to a Sunfire 300 which does 300WPC at 8 ohms, 600WPC at 4 ohms and 1200WPC at 2 ohms.

I tried them before with a Kenwood 700M which was rebuilt by EchoWars and benched at over 200WPC into 8 ohms. Going from the Kenwood to the Sunfire was a noticeable difference.

Also, those speaker ussually sell for between $700-1000 a pair. Nice grab! Lots of info on these at thecarversite.com or carveraudio.com

Thanks for the info marantzfan. They need a little cosmetic help, but I plugged them into my HK 3385 reciever, speaker 1 to the highs, and speaker 2 to the driver. Measly power I know, but I plugged in one of my favorite cd's, and the sound was awesome. I can only imagine with some fire power running these things.

I found some new foam strips for carvers on ebay. I'll buy that this week, A little elbow grease and some black wood stain, and they will look near mint.

I've been considering some parasound or vincent amp/pre-amps.

I'm in trouble now!

A friend of mine had those speakers and sold them just because of the power they needed. His better amps did not have enuf power so he put pro amps on them and then they just didn't sound right.

But hooked to a quality high powered they can sing.

Probably not the deal of the century, but hey, we're only 10 yrs into this century. Still an outstanding deal! Enjoy the hell out of your new tunes. :music:

Great deal for you!

I am amazed at people who get gear from relatives and sell it without even doing a simple Ebay completed listings search to get a ballpark figure on the value of what they have.

Lucky for us....

Yeah, these are quite a departure from your Klipsch, both in design and sound. Like I said when I got my Amazing Silvers; these have both the balls of an AR9 and the imaging of DQ-10... I think they do everything well without compromise.

Placement and toe-in is critical with these speakers, once you get them dialed in you may decide that these are your last pair of speakers.

That wasn't a deal; you STOLE those~

I recommend a Sunfire 300x2 at minimum, the 600x2 would be a better choice. OR, consider biamping with 2 amps (two 300x2 amps would be fantastic)

Congrats on what may well be the deal of the century, seeing as you actually BOUGHT them and didn't have them given to you~
