VERSION 1.0
My original RCM was a modified ice cream maker and a modified shop-vac wand (hand held). While this got the job done with very little monetary investment, I was already thinking about working out a few kinks and making improvements. (If you read the discussion, you will see that I was concerned that the rotation speed was too fast for a thorough vacuuming - it took many passes for the surface finally to be clean and dry.) However, for the first time I was hearing what clean records could really sound like. :music: Here is the original thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=194765

VERSION 2.0
Here, I essentially took the VERSION 1.0 parts and built them into an empty Victrola cabinet. Other than that, it was virtually the same concept. Original thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=243806

Soon, I became again concerned about the need for so many revolutions to vacuum the record clean and dry. I reasoned that some evaporation was happening along with the vacuuming, as the fluid is volatile and it was taking so long. Conceptually, evaporation was not what I wanted happening. To try to solve this, I built another wand, but with two channels. This was very bad. :thumbsdn: What happened was that there seemed to be too much of the mooshy pad touching the record (and absorbing moisture) and not enough airflow. The records were a sloppy mess. I adjusted everything I could think of - the opening on the end of the wand, adding notches at the ends of the channels, covering one channel up, reversing the nap of the fabric - it was just all wrong. :tears: And don't talk to me about suction! There was so much suction that unless the set screw was very tightly threaded on to the spindle, the record would unscrew it and stop dead. There was plenty of suction.

Though I had seen countless photos of DIY wands that looked like this, with seemingly satisfactory results, I began to reason that mine was performing poorly due to there being no curve at the point where the channel met the record surface, like the VPI vacuum wand and so many DIY wands made from PVC tube. I decided that I was done trying to DIY this part of the project - I purchased a VPI 16.5 vacuum wand upgrade/replacement kit and began considering how best to attach it. :D

In the meantime (many moons), I had (have) been spinning the record by hand for the "suck cycle" and it was (is) clean and dry in one revolution, probably 20 seconds or so, using my original wand. :smoke:

I have been reading several threads lately about home-mixed fluids vs. commercial fluids (For the record (ha!), I use both.) and I started thinking that I want to find a better alternative than the spray bottle I have been using for my rinse-water application (Absopure steam-distilled, in case you are curious) because I always get a little overspray on the label. This is fine if I am going to play it right away because it will have plenty of time to air-dry before I put it away. However, I have been cleaning a lot of records at once lately and waiting for the minor overspray on the labels to dry before I put them in a new poly-lined sleeve has cramped my efficiency.

Today, well, yesterday, actually, now, I went to Meijer (a Michigan-based retailer) and found plastic Ketchup and Mustard bottles (made in the US, Illinois, I think) for $.99 ea. (I have been trying to purchase domestic products when I can, paying particular attention to the small things, too. Ask me about Harbor Freight Tools, sometime. :no:) Anyway, I checked them for air-tightness (they passed) and bought them, along with a new bottle of Dawn detergent, now with OXI enzymes or something. Once home, I mixed up a new batch of schmootz and cleaned a record, messing around with the motor-spinning vs. hand spinning. I decided now was the time for action; I descended into the Pit of Despair, otherwise known as the workroom in the basement, determined to discover which was the weak link in the chain: the DIY wand of yore or the galloping motor. I emerged with sawdust in my hair, victory in my heart, and ... The Verdict: "Like, it was both, or something, I think." Hmmm ... :scratch2:

For all the gnashing of teeth over the shortcomings of the 16.5, more than countered by its genuine praise, VPI sure got one thing right: there is no little amount of magic at the contact point of their wand and my records. Perhaps they discovered just the right curve, just the right width of the slot, just the right diameter of the tube, just the right depth and nap of the cushion, or the combination of all of them is synergistic, but it is a tremendous improvement, even at warp spin. I am satisfied that my record-cleaning exploits will continue faster, more efficient, and more thoroughly accurate than before. (Please note that there is no dancing banana here.)

VERSION 4.0
I cannot bring myself to drop $50-$60 (or more!) at Grainger Supply for the OEM Dayton 18-20rpm motor(s) that VPI uses in their machine(s), but VERSION 4.0 indeed will include a slower motor, possibly even a reversible one, and maybe a real platter. However, I really like the hockey puck mount as there is no contamination of the clean side of the record by flopping it down on the platter that the dirty side just came from. :thmbsp:

Although you might be personally all set, in regards to Fluid Bottles, another source I found, which I myself had never thought of, was those beauty supply stores.

We have one of those Sally Stores here, and they had a large variety of plastic bottles in various sizes, some with snap caps.

Of course these aren't lab grade plastic bottles, so I might be concerned about long term storage of fluids, and rinse waters, but for short term, I don't think one would have a problem. At least they are easily gotten. Their intended use, is probably for hair dyes.

The ones I found, were smallish 2oz botttles, and these smaller bottles I like ideally while working over the RCM. Hope this helps some who might be looking for small bottles. Mark
 
Depends on how much fluid you want to apply, but for my technique a syringe (without needle) works great, very easy to control. It sucks up fluid from a little Nalgene jar, which I fill from the big jug of pre-mixed fluid I have ready to go.

(And the spray bottle concept has obvious flaws - no control, over-spray, etc.) I was determined to make it more convenient, but not expensive.

I had seen various small, plastic "lab" squirt bottles, which is what I was hoping to find, but I really did not know where to look (a beauty supply shoppe probably would not have crossed my mind :)) and I was concerned that they be airtight. I had resigned myself to being content until I stumbled across something when a friend mentioned the Ketchup and Mustard containers. I was inspired - they work great and were priced right!
 
Vactrola! I love it! By the way, I have seen your photos in other threads and I do believe, without hesitation, that you have the best DIY RCM on the planet! Mine certainly lacks the finishing touches your has, plus all the work you put in to extensive modifications to the cabinet. Bravo!

Once I find the right motor to replace "zippy" here, I plan to dress-up the wiring and maybe move the switches to the top. However, they are so darn convenient where they are, and out of sight with the doors closed, that I might just leave them be.

Same at the Beauty Supply Shops, they have an assortment of various sizes, some looking quite similar to your mustard-ketchup bottles, are clear, with graduated markings on them for measuring. Larger sizes were available, such as pts-qts too, and some were like 2oz, 4oz, 6oz, so one can find the exact size they like for their personal needs.

The lab supply houses of course have a variety of higher grade vessels, but there is often a minimum order quantity, and as well shipping costs involved.

As for my commercial AVIS Cleaners, I do always keep them in their supplied bottles for long term storage, and at one time, they had small high quality applicatior bottles with the snap top caps, but they sadly no longer get these.

Finishing touches:
Mine had an exposure to a room painting at some point without any masking effort extended to protect it. It was literally covered in a blue dot matrix of paint splatters, and broken parts (one leg had a 95% break in it at a curve). I also cut the left lid away from the cabinet, as it was nailed and glued shut in its production. That side was originally intended to have a radio mounted in it, or, for record storage. So to open it up, i had to make a rough-condition item into a real mess. So, a refinishing was the only way I was going to be able to keep this thing in the house (factor: she who must be obeyed). "Finishing" is what I do for a living, so, it came as a natural for me to clean it up.

I shouldn't have bogarted on your thread like that, by posting the pics of mine. I just got really excited by seeing yours, the other Vactrola in this world of ours, and thought I'd post. Hopefully it was not inappropriate. Apologies offered, if so. If not, then :banana:

Raising this thread up again to ask about the puck/platter. I am wanting to make an RCM for myself, and it seems to me that using the 4" platter (a la DC and Nitty Gritty) makes a lot of sense for the reason DC mentioned: avoiding contamination of the clean side of a record. However, almost every DIY RCM I see has a full-sized platter. So to DC: with more than two years gone by, would you still recommend a 4" platter or a full-sized one? Thanks for any input anyone has on this.
 
Well, my RCM still gets regular use as it is and I have felt no compelling reason to change the setup. Truthfully, the hockey puck center was born out of the desire to use available parts on hand (read: cheap) as I had a hockey puck I could sacrifice and did not have a disused TT platter.

In my original design, with the hockey puck mounted on the ice cream machine motor, the puck was solidly mounted and supported the record admirably. In its current setup, it is held in place with gravity and flexes a lot when pressure is applied, making the record less "rigid" for lack of a better word. It has been a goal of mine to re-do the current puck-to-motor connection to regain its original stability, but it has not (thus far) been a priority.
 
I decided to go with a full platter when I built my unit.

The puck style record support just bothered me-one of the reasons the Nitty Gritty did not appeal to me. I am just not that concerned about contamination from the mat onto the cleaned side.

If I get a really disgusting record, I can always clean it twice, and clean the mat between. But honestly, I have so far never bought a record that required that treatment, in my opinion. If it's that bad, most likely the prior owner just trashed the record, because no one would likely buy it.

I occasionally do clean and vaccum the platter-just because it makes me feel better :yes:
 
Thanks for the feedback from both of you (more input is still welcome!). In my situation, I have neither an old platter nor a hockey puck laying around. So either way I go will entail making something, at least to begin with. This is especially so if I end up using the OE arbor from a VPI 16.5 (a very strong possibility), which requires three small holes in the platter near the spindle so it can be screwed down to the arbor's mounting surface (therefore an old platter from a record player will be hard to use). So I am basically free to go with any sized platter I want at this stage of the game. I may end up trying both!

I've cleaned well over 10,000 records with it. Note that it's a ten inch platter (cannibilized from an old Victrola), providing adequate support for all discs. The steel platter is very easy to clean and keep clean. Also note that it's manually operated. Very fast and easy to use. I don't know why so many guys are compelled to use a motor to spin the platter?
 
Am I the only one that just cringes at the idea of a lovely old acoustic Victrola being turned into something it wasnt? Don't get me wrong, the RCM itself is nice work but being something of a preservationist, it just makes me wince a bit to see such a lovely piece converted away from it's place in history. On the other hand, if the cabinet had previously been emptied and it didn't have working guts, by all means go for it. I just hate the thought that the original mechanism was tossed out. I feel the same pains when I see 1930s radio cabinets emptied out and turned into bookshelves or bars or whatever too.
