Several weeks ago, I happened across a really sad sight. This receiver was in a trailer with up to 8 cats at a time over 25 years.....and was never once cleaned. I am still amazed at what I pushed through to save this thing, words cannot describe how nasty this place was, it needed to be condemned. If I had cat allergies, I would have died right then and there.
I just couldn't let this thing go to the dump, so I threw it in the back of the van and rode home with the windows down. Once home, the first thing I did was get my yard blower and blow off what I could. Then I got some paper towels and wiped it down a bit (even though I actually did wipe it down once at the trailer, believe it or not). I then took it out of the wood case and took the blower to it again.
Once I felt I could not make any more progress with the blower, I took it into the garage for more detailed cleaning. Over the course of the next two weeks, I spent several hours wiping down everything I could with a light solution of cleaner that removes animal smell and oils. I used a heavier solution to clean the wood case, kept wiping until I removed all the grime. The front, initially I thought was a gold patina (wrong), I used a citrus solution to cut through the oily residue.
On the inside, hard to believe how much creeps in through the vents over 25 years. It was so bad, I had to take a tooth brush dipped in the cleaner to get the gunk off the boards (very carefully, of course). I took strips of paper towel, sprayed it with cleaner and wiped down every surface I could reach, using a small screwdriver occasionally for tight spots. As well, I went through a box of Q-tips too.
For the case, I ended with some Howard's Feed & Wax. Surprisingly, the case was not damaged, all corners look great, finish still shines.
I put it all back together this evening. Works GREAT! Looks INCREDIBLE! I really cannot believe how good it looks from where I started. I cleaned the pots, all work very smoothly. Check out the before and after pics.
