New here and just looking to see what others think of their onkyo equipment. I have a TX8211 reciever and use it for music playback. I have been very happy with this reciever, and the matching cd player for it. Playing back through average speakers and like the sound quality. Seems to me to be a good piece of equipment especially for the price.

I've been using an Onkyo TX-DS696 AVR for HT and secondary 2-channel for several years now. To my ears it sounded better than the Adcom preamp/processor and Harman-Kardon PA-5800 5-channel amp it replaced. Right now I have the Onkyo driving the center and surround channels, and my Phase Linear 400 Series 2 driving the mains.
 
Welcome, I have the older to say vintage Onkyo model TX8500 and it is very well built. I also had a TX6000 newer but built well also. I cannot say to much on the new stuff except I have heard nothing bad mentioned.
 
Fogot to mention some of Onkyo's older cassette decks if I am not mistaken have a Nakamichi connection and is a good thing in build and performance. Next!
 
Onkyo, new and old, makes good stuff. Not sure about their HTIB, but their receivers are good, AV receivers included.
 
I had an Onkyo TX-811, which would've been older and significantly down-market from yours. I must confess, it sounded quite excellent, even though the speakers I had at the time probably didn't do it much justice.

The smaller form factor and all-digital display just didn't work for me though, so I passed it on to a new owner.

Since you say that your speakers are just average, you'd probably be forgiven for upgrading the speakers (I'm sure someone around here would be skilled at making recommendations.) I would think the Onkyo would give full advantage to better speakers.

I've never had any of their old gear, but I use a Onkyo TX 8255 for my second "HT" system and it sounds great! Seem to be a solid brand throughout their history.
 
Onkyo has always made some solid products and is now #1 with A/V Receivers and Pre/pros for Build, Performance, Features, Ergonomics and Value. :thmbsp:
But they are last for Customer Service! :thumbsdn:
 
I always thought Onkyo equipment was solid performers. During the 80's, I used to have an Onkyo Integra A 8087 integrated amplifier. Worked great. I own now a Integra TA 2058 3-head cassette deck I bought at the SA for $15 which is a solid performer. There was a vintage Onkyo receiver which I seen at Cash Converters that had 3 (!) tape monitor switches! I would have bought it, but the price was too high.
 
I'm an onkyo fan, no doubt about it .

I guess you can say I come from onk stock, dad and uncle have both had em forever and still do. (I'm sure fellow AKers have seen me push the a-9555, for good reason)
I've got 2 tx-sv909s' , a dx-5500, a dx-1800, and a tape player but can't recall its number. love em all!
I've been jonesing for some vintage onk for a while too.


I say run that onk into the ground ,and if you've got cash to burn get better speakers.

That's my onkyo in one sentence or less.
 
Onkyo would certainly be near the top of my list when looking for a receiver, old or new.
 
I think of Onkyo as good honest, lower middle class equipment. It's generally good sounding and well made for the price. And decently engineered. Nothing wrong with it. Just not the best gear but among the best for that price point.
 
I run separates from Onkyo, whole 5 component stack with a couple of CD players too.
Definitely not as good as a Marantz tube receiver but no doubt, it's at the top of my list when shopping for a new receiver. Every Onkyo I have used had some serious drive to it, along with quality.
 
I bought a brand new Onkyo individual componet full stack rack stereo, 4 or 5 high, including speakers, for the wife many years ago. It sounded good. The equipment was good but I really didn't care for the speakers (they sounded ok, looked amazing, they were ok) but the wife was very happy. About 4 days later I went to work overseas. About 7 days later my wife and a friend of mine went to Disneyland. We got our house robbed. They came in to steal the stereo system, nothing else was stolen. They came in through the bathroom window. Within a year we moved. That was a quick $5000 or whatever it was lost. I was pi$$ed but what can you do? The police came and told my wife they couldn't do anything. So what in the world are the police good for anyway?

Lessons Learned: never throw away boxes in the garbage outside your house. Put the empty boxes in the car and take them somewhere else to throw them away.

And...get a security system and guns. We did both.

I have an Integra A-8087 amplifier that failed catastrophically twice, a receiver that did the same, and a couple of their cassette decks that were troublesome. I like their T-9 tuner's sonics. I would rate their gear in the middle overall performance wise, and below average in reliability.
