Can anybody identify these 12 inchers? Seller is offering them as Wharfedales. Don't look like any I've seen.

They're interesting...nice cast baskets, and a real horn or bell-shaped cone. Look like quality somethings. Don't know what the cone thingies are for. Damping?

If they're cheap, I'd grab them either way (but I'm a bit of a speaker nut). They bear several marks of a good quality driver. Heavy cast frames,the cone is curved-not just a cone, and the magnets look to be robust. They may be Goodmans of England, but I can't be sure.

Me too... Can't place it... The little squares on the cone must surely be for dampening, however, they look like they're from AFTER the W**E series, like maybe the mid '70's. It would help if the seller had said which model they came from. I don't think they're from a cheapo model. They're not from the E** series. Maybe they're from the SP series. Or maybe they're from one of the nicer '80's models. I really don't know.

*EDIT* - Wait, are those modern FOAM surrounds? Don't think I've ever seen that on ANY of the Rank-era Wharfedale drivers (Not that kind of foam... The stuff they used way, way-back in the '50's and early '60's was a foam/felt mix).

Foams could have been replaced with incorrect foams.

That's what's killing me!

I can swear I saw one of those on AK just a couple of months ago. Goodmans did a three legged cast basket, but different. "Richard Allan" made woofers with a separate terminal on different basket legs, see-

Not sure... Seller is asking Sub-$100 for the two, but shipping would probably add $50+. Seller has a bunch of things up for sale in rotation. (Currently, and for months now, he's been asking way high money for Wharfedale W90's.) No response at all to my questions to him to date

Have no idea what they sound like, or specs. Think I'll pass, and post in Dollars & Sense. If you might be interested, I can send you the link first.

You mean the W90's with all that sand and crap on top, and one is missing a right-side rear-panel? Those the ones you're talking about? Yeah, $450 is pretty-ridiculous (For a restored pair, sure, but not for those). They look like W90C's, judging by the cone-tweeter and vented rear-panel on one side.

I wish the grills on mine were removable. I'd love to get a proper look at those drivers. There's no baffle up top on mine, just the mids and tweeters suspended on metal rods, so you'd probably be able to do damn-easy driver-changes if you could just get beyond that grillcloth (I love the way those alnico Super 3's look with that big, fat, gold-painted magnet-structure... I've seen woofers that are smaller than those tweeters... It's funny, these speakers actually have me loving KISS again... That hasn't happened since I was like 10 years old).

Nope. Very nice looking pair, early W90's (like ours), but @ $800!!

Gotta be careful about getting kicked into Dollars & Sense. If you search for Wharfedale in Kijiji Ontario (Ottawa), you'll find them.

You guys seem to have a thriving used hi-fi market. Not great down here in CT, but it's got it's occasional moments (I drove all the way to Maine for my W90's, so you get the idea, but it's really just a 6hr trip each way if you pack a lunch :rolleyes: ).

I saw the W90's you meant. $800 is definitely high for those (That's always been the cool thing about the W90's... For the sound you get, they are incredibly-inexpensive in terms of market-value, and I'm fine with that... I think part of it has to do with the size of the cabs, but still, when you consider the sound-quality you'll be getting, a pair of early W70's or W90's is an absolute steal... I'm really stuck on the sound of the Super 3 cone-tweet and those mids... Amazing drivers in those things).

Getting my weekend started a few hours early. Frank Sinatra's playing right now. "My Way / The Best Of". Incredible-sounding CD set (I compared all the digital collections, and that one from the late '90's just soars like an eagle). It's a 2CD retrospective of his Reprise catalog, so all stereo stuff. And man, do the W90's just eat it up and ask for seconds. Those strings and horns... OMG... :drool:

They must have sold quite a few W90 pairs back in the day. I see a lot of them on the auction block.

*EDIT* - Just saw something that I hadn't noticed before on the back of mine. It indeed says "sand-filled BAFFLES" (I knew about the rear panels, but not the baffles... That's way-cool if that's what they're talking about).

Well, I DID get them (finally). Having (3 way) open baffle thoughts. Or hot rod my W90's. B&W crossed them over at 500Hz.
