6n2 Tube replacement

Bump for opinions. I'm getting the Reisoing A10 this week and looking for upgrade options?

The Russian 6N2P-EV is a nice and easy upgrade, and honestly you may find it to be the best option. It does everything well.

If you want to get the 12AX7 to 6N2 adapter, there are many options both vintage and new.

i have the A10, and this is how I would personally rank them in my system, along with the power tube they sound best with:

1. Telefunken 12AX7 with EH 6CA7
2. Mullard longplate 12AX7 with Gold Lion KT77
3. RCA grey plate 12AX7 with EH 6CA7
4. (tie) 6N2P-EV with EH 6CA7 and Sonotone 12AX7 with RFT EL34

The amp is voiced for a 6CA7, EL34B, so the EH 6CA7 is hard to beat on most music. For more intimate performances, the EL34 shines. KT77 works well too.

I got one last week, out of the box it sounded good, but I changed the power tubes
to Winged "C" EL34's and it really opened up sounded so much better. I have ordered
a pair of 6N2 tubes from Viva tubes and they are coming today I'll let you know.

I have some old Tesla EL34B's and Groove Tube EL 34's left over from my rock guitar days. Also a bunch of NOS GE 12AT7's and a few 12AX7's (rca, sylvania)

Curious if adapting to !2Axx tubes opens up a whole new world or better to stick with upgrading the 6N2's?

thx

Approximate cost for each of those upgrade combos?

thx

Staying somewhat on topic, Have you tried 12AT7's? I did in my little TubeCube and ii worked and sounded great. (JAN )

1. $80 pr of used Fisher branded telefunkens $44 for the EH 6CA7’s.

2. Mullards were $200 pr and are hard to find. Gold Lions were about $100 a pair.

3. NOS RCA grey plates $75 a pair

4. NOS 6N2P-EV were $16 for a pair used Sonotones (clear top) were $35 for the pair. NOS RFT’s $175 a pair

I did try some 12AT7’s and they worked pretty great if you want more headroom. I tried RCA 6201 and Brimar 12AT7 and they were both great (with EL34)

Thanks again,

So that's the order of best sounding (to you) 1 being your first choice, etc?

Correct. I also think the amp benefits from a preamp. I am currently using one of those cheap FX Audio Tube01 preamps. Really added weight and opened up the soundstage beyond the speakers.

On your question about the 6N2P-EV, it has it all: clear, extended treble, 3D mids, and hefty bass. But it may seem too bright and in your face in some systems. Probably be good with your Tesla EL34B.

I have used them for years, and when I bought this amp, I wanted to try something different and roll some 12AX7’s. But I could happily live with the 6N2P-EV.
