Classy Looking/Stand Alone VU Meters?

Hi All,

First post on your wonderfully informational forum! I've loved Sansui equipment from way back in my youth when my brother brought home a G-9000 w/4 SP-X9000's while in the Air-Force overseas... I fell in love.

Didn't own any Sansui myself until about 4 or 5 years ago when I purchased a G9700 and a G-8000. The 9700 is in great shape while the 8000 has some problems with one channel that goes in and out when the balance is adjusted.

I love both of them, they are beautiful and sound great but, they are so damn big! If I had a big entertainment center, I would certainly use and display them all the time but, I don't.

So now, I just went and got some individual components to get a rack system going. Spent the last few days overpaying for a TU-717, CA-2000 and AU-9900 on ebay to get things started. Not exactly what I wanted but, I figured it was a good start. I can trade up as I go.

In any case, neither the CA-2000 or the AU-9900 (which I plan to use as the amp for now) has any power meters on them. For some reason this is a problem for me! Don't know why it is, just used to them on the 9700 and 8000 I guess.

Does anybody know where I can get a classy looking component which only provides the VU Meters to display DBs/Watts? Preferable black-face to match the other components and not too busy looking but still classy...

Any thoughts?

Thanks Much in advance

Yeah, don't want to spend too much $$ on them since it's only a temporary measure (hopefully). Maybe up to $150-$200. I've been looking around the net and am surprised that I haven't really found anything like this. There are some LED's that I've seen but, not analog meters like I would prefer.

Thanks for pointing out the McIntosh... Shame it's for a car, it's basically what I'm looking for, just need it in a component-like case and it would be ideal.

Maybe you can make use of a Sansui. Have you seen MA-7 ?

Wow, never saw that unit before... Did a quick scan on ebay for both completed/active items and didn't get any results.. I may have to just wait for a BA- Unit to come up within my price range, probably a BA-2000. Patience, I'm told is a virtue, is something I seem to lack at times! :-)

Thanks Guys... I'll keep an eye out for the MA-7 also.

The MA-7 is very cool, but....., they are rarely seen for sale, so I wouldnt suggest that anyone get their hopes up too much to find one anytime soon. (the one I have is not for sale). The BA-2000 that huskmeister mentioned would be a good choice for an excellent amplifier that has nice looking meters. Cant say I blame anyone who wants meters on his amp, though models such as the AU-717 & AU-919 are still great without them.

Realistic made standalone VU meter units but I can't recall the model #'s.
I own the Realistic APM-300 that I could let go but that isn't what you are looking for. Try ebay listings under the Realistic name.

Mitsubishi made one that fit on the front of thier power amps, you can find one here:

Heathkit also made one that looked pretty decent:

Better move fast on that one less than 15 hours to go at the time of this posting.

Crown probably makes the nicest one I have ever seen that has meters, can switch between multiple amps and speakers, etc.

Welcome Huckmeistr !

Hey amigo, glad to have you on board.
Just a thought, and by the way, nobody on here has ever accused me of being informational.... Seeing as how I'm always having to improvise around here since the wench cleaned me out, killing & growing what I eat & such, I've learned how to make do in a pinch. Take the pic here of my combo multimeter/barometer for example.... Anyhows, I can tell you & me both like to watch things go back & forth while we're listening to our tunes. (Bouncing up & down is another subject). So, until such time as you acquire your meters you're lookin' for, here's an i-deer.
Go get you a couple of them tick-tock thingys they use for piano teaching & set em up side by side. Invert 2 Bud longnecks over the pointy things & let em rip. While not VU meters per se, they're pretty durned close, & I can bet ain't none of your friends got none.
Hope this helps, & once again, WELCOME.

I have acquired one of those....how do you hook them up?? They only have speaker inputs.... do you run wires FROM the speakers to the meters?? How else would you HEAR anything..

Maybe I'm having a blonde moment....just don't know how to use this thing.
