I have 7 acres of industrial property surrounded by farm ground. Unfortunately for the neighboring farmers, the local vermin have found solace in hiding under the multitude of equipment parked on my property, and wreaking havoc on their crops. Our dog Max does a good job on the gophers, but the squirrels, cottontails, and jackrabbits are either quicker than him, or can sneak into tiny places he can't go. Years ago, when I had my FFL, I picked up a cheapo single shot .410 and did my best to keep the population to a dull roar.

About 10 years ago, a local hardware store closed, and a friend and I bought out what was left of their ammo inventory. We split the .22, he took most of the 12ga, and I took some of the 12 and all (1400 rounds) of 20ga. They sold it to us for a buck a box of 20 by the case.

After 9/11, the price of ammo has gone sky high as you know, and all of a sudden my .410 ammo was costing me over $9 per box, and my 12ga. is a little too nice to beat up out here, so I decided it was time to buy a used beater 20ga. and start using my cheap ammo. It's a little too populous around here to shoot the .22, so I needed another shotgun. I traded a few M7 bayonets I have for a sweet little Mossberg pump that only had 5 rounds through it. The Friday before the 4th of July, I took it out for the first time. I got 13 cottontails and 1 jackrabbit, and 1 squirrel in 12 minutes. The reason it took that long was because I had to come back to the office twice to get ammo. Trouble was, again the gun was like new, and a little too nice to beat up out here. I started looking again.

Last week I spotted a nice single shot 20ga on a local gun forum that belonged to someone about 15 miles away, so I got ahold of him. He came by, found a bunch of goodies in my warehouse he wanted, so we did a trade. He brought it yesterday, and we took it to the local gun shop to do the transfer. Thanks to Ca. laws, I have to wait 10 days before I can use it, but I have plenty others to use in the interim.

Here's a photo. It's a Rossi (I don't even know the model number - don't care) single shot 20ga, 3"chamber, modified choke, with the black synthetic stock. Perfect for rough duty around here. Can't wait to give 'er a try.

Nice I'm hangin on to a buddies .22mag built the same way. His need to go back to open sights as he put a scope on it and now can barely get ahold of the hammer. Not safe IMHO.

PS looks like we are heading your way in Jan now Fair warning LOL

I like .410's There fun. It is a challenge on sporting clays, They are quick on informal 3-gun matches and mine can hold 15 rounds if needed.:thmbsp:

And I look at it this way. 12G 00 buck has 9 pellets. 3" .410 has 5. I love my 12Ga pump and 20 auto but the ability to put 75 32cal balls downrange as fast as I can pull the trigger. :thmbsp:

Sweet, yeah shooting 'tree rats' is fun ! as far as the cost of ammo, Dick's has Remington target 'club' loads on sale for less than $5 per box, they work fine on sporting clays for me !
