DIY drivers

Maybe I'm making myself an ass here, but I'll take the risk and ask:

Does anybody have info or experience on making drivers themselves? I've bumped into some expensive hand-made speakers and been intrigued by the idea of making my own speakers up from scratch.

Maybe that's just plain stupid and maybe I would never reach the quality of factory products, but still, home made is always home made.

And here's a harder one: how about headphone drivers? I have a pair of coconut halves that would make the sweetest DIY headphones ever...

The famous Jordon Modules were literally built on the kitchen table, assembly line fashion, with a few ladies from the neighborhood sitting around, passing the parts around, I suppose gossiping and sipping tea. Hahah!

Tooling up, obtaining the parts, having parts made to your specs would all be prohibitive for just a few drivers.

Jordan Modules were small 2" titanium cone near full range drivers. They were used in tall linear arrays along with a subwoofer. I think they went down to about 200 hz.

I have been thinking of an all out 8" full range field coil driver. I would make every part other than drawing the wire. It would have a basket made of Ebony. It would be supported by the motor assembly only and not directly touching the front baffle. I would mold the cones using pulp. Plus a ton of other little goodies.
I bought a winding machine but I haven’t started practicing yet.

That sounds like a great idea. I know others have been thinking about feild coil drivers lately.

Would you consider ribbon drivers? I mention this because it has been done several times in the last few years. There is a book out by Justus Verhagen on DIY ribbons.
