East Coast v. West Coast Studios

Maybe this has already been discussed, but in general (there are always exceptions) West Coast recordings sound a little better to me for 60s/70s/80s era rock and pop in terms of production, engineering, mastering, etc.

Maybe that's where the better (or more successful not necessarily better) bands went? Studios had more money for better equipment/engineering talent? Influence of the motion picture industry?

Not to discount Motown (which could be hit or miss early on but got a lot better), places like Fame and Muscle Shoals, Stax, Capricorn (also hit or miss). And is Criteria East Coast or a different category? I seem to recall some not so great recordings from there, but seems like it was a thing for a while.

Well there's Atlantic, Columbia and Electric Lady just to name 3 in NYC that produced some decent sounds.

In my area of SE PA most of the recording studios have left Philly due to the city wage tax.
Lancaster PA is where a lot of the recording studios are now located in PA.
I know this because my son is in the music industry.
