Fantasy system.

Put together a "Fantasy system". Price no object but must be realistic enough to work in your current listening room. Other brand gear OK but must include at least one McIntosh component. Whether you heard the gear or not, it is irrelevant, use your intuition for system synergy.

I'll start for my 14x17 room.

dCS Scarlatti triple stack. Transport/clock/DAC. (might as well throw a whole wad of cash at the digital nastiness in hopes of taming it. :D)

Continuum Caliburn/Cobra S Turntable/tonearm. (Well, the vinyl junkies really like it so it should be enough. :D)

McIntosh MS750. (Everyone knows this one well. :thmbsp: How can you resist the flexibility of having so many CDs under your fingertips.)

DaRTzeel NHB-18NS preamp. (How can you resist having Swiss precision in your system and a preamp that runs off batteries? No ground loops hum. :D Not sure if the phono stage would be enough?)

Tenor Audio 350M Reference Amplifers (I seem to really like the hybrid amps with tube drive stage and Mosfets so these $100k amps should give me what I am looking for. Who cares if it is a small company that has been bankrupt once before? :D)

Magico M5 speakers. (Probably doesn't get much better than this with conventional drivers and size/performance/price for a 14x17 room. Just in case, lot's of bass traps to tame them if the room is too small )

Purist Audio Dominus ICs and Speaker Cables. (Because you just have to have some fluid in your cables!)

The Harmonic Resolution Systems rack. (How can you place all that expensive gear on anything else? :D)

Well, there it is, more than a Ferrari but what the hell, it is a Fantasy system. (Who needs a Ferrari anyways when we're getting 12 inches of snow tonight? :D)

Looks familiar :scratch2:

If cost is no object, and I had a slightly larger living room and no neighbors...

Speakers – B&W 800D or Vienna Acoustics "The Music"
Power Amp – MC1.2kws
Preamp – C1000 with tubes
DAC – MDA1000
Source – Sonos ZP90, MVP871
Power – PS Audio Power Plant Premier

But, if I stayed in a similarly sized place, and had to maintain minimalism, but money was still no object

Speakers – B&W 803D
Amp – Rowland 501 Monoblocks
Preamp – C220
(Or, perhaps, MA6600)
Source/DAC: MCD500, Sonos ZP90
Power – PS Audio Quintet

... or, if I had to downsize in terms of space:

Speakers – Sonus Faber Auditor Ms
Sub – Velodyne SPL1000
Integrated – MA6600
DAC – DacMagic
Power – PS Audio Quintet
Source – ZP90, existing DVD player with digital out to DACMagic

If I was staying within a real world situation, I would swap out by MBL 111e's for the new 101e VII, bi amp them by adding 2 more 1.2k's, then swap out by MS300 for a SooLoos unit.
If I were starting from zero and opening up the wallet, I would first have to take a year to try and hear some of the units I have missed.

I'll just make my build easy... I want Powerman's system... At least his speakers and stacks of amps.

Well Serge, great choice of individual components – every time there's a DartZeel in Audiogon I stare at it for a few minutes :D.

The big question is: will they play well together? There's a definite chance (and not a small 1-2% IMO, more like 30%+) that the sum will sound much less musical and pleasing to the ears than what you currently have. It might sound impressive for short audition, but get fatiguing pretty darn quick - over the years, that has evolved as my biggest audiophile fear.

Back to the "game". I have to give it some more thought, but I believe I definitely stay with McIntosh power amps and Sonus Faber speakers (perhaps getting the Memento to replace the Homage, but I'd have to listen to them first). I would also listen to the Wilson Duette since they are supposed to play nice with room positioning and sound smoother than the rest of the Wilson line. Like most guitar players, tone is the most important thing to me, and the McIntosh + Sonus Faber tone really hits the spot for me. I would also have to think hard for a DAC I'd choose over the MDA1000. For turntables, I'd either go with an SME30 or the latest Thorens Reference. I'd definitely have the most expensive record cleaner in the market (in a sound-proof booth).

A x-over + subs set-up like yours would also be interesting, but not enough room for 2 big subs.

I'd consider spending a bundle, however, in getting off the AC grid and having a bunch of batteries in my garage as well as re-doing my listening room with bass traps and absorption panels built-in the walls for a seamless look.

Alberto, I had given that some thought for this "fantasy system". Notice the choice of high resolution front end but a very musical and not "analytical" choice of pre and amplification. Even the cables were selected with that in mind. Combine that with the what some have called the very best speaker they have heard so far and I think this system would drown the room with sweet harmonics and sound very musical. :music: One problem though, I wouldn't spend that kind of cash on my 14x17 room. :D

I'd go for a Audio Note Gaku-ON mono amplifiers. 45 watts, parallel single-ended,mono triode configuration. At only $252,500.00 for the pair, it represents true value in today's uncertain economy. :D

Do they have pure silver windings in their output transformers for that kind of cash? Well, it is "your" fantasy system!

In my current room I'd go with:

MX150, C1000C/T, MCD500, MS750, MC1.2KW (3), MC402 (2), XRT1K (2), XCS1K, XR27 (2), CS100 (2), JL F113 (2)

If my house ever get's built:

Duplicate Ivan's since the room sizes will be fairly close so everything will fit.

Fantasy?

I would have 3 levels:

Level 1. Something closer/reality I can have first - A BIGGER ROOM!

Level 2. If I have this, well, for sure, It will STILL be McIntosh from end, but speakers would now have 4 choices, McIntosh XRT2Kw, Wilson Alexandria 2.2, Magico M5 & Acapella Triolon Excalibur.

Apart from the first 2 pairs of which I have audition for a short while, the rest are based purely on their lower models performances (one of which I own today) in believe the higher ones would be much better. I could be wrong altogether.

Level 3. I will try this, but so far, only one system I can complete - the McIntosh FULL Ref "K" system - but with newer top CD/SACD - the anticipated MCD/MDA2k.

The second I could only go as far as Pre/Power and Speakers. And though I dread tubes (maintenance etc, ...), but since this is fantasy, I will go for the Wavac SET 10th Anniversary SH883 150 watters Mono amps and the Acapella Sphaeron Excalibur speakers. I have read and seen these terribly costly objects of desires only from the dealer's brochures and pictures.

Seriously, I can never have this kind of monies to go for this level of fantasy system (level 2 & 3). Even if I have, it way too much for me to think how to justify. My brain would have gone "kaput" just imagining and trying to piece together the kind of stories I would need to tell to my better half in order to convince her to let me go that way. Not to say I dont have that kind of disposable cash in the first place!

But since this is a "fun fantasy", why not? :D

And have a good laugh. Now back to my system, hmmm, nice! :music:

Cheers!

Since this is a fantasy, she would actually tell you that she has inherited her uncle's estate (Zhou Zhengyi? :scratch2:) and that she would gladly pay for any of those components to make your dream come true.

Serge,

She dont love me enough if its "ANY of the components", it would have been, "Darling, is this ALL you want? I would pay for them now ...."

Anyway, this is an even far-fetch fantasy! back to reality my friend! Else I cant work today! :D

Cheers!
