Finally able to say "no"

I wish I had that much self control. Last week I was out cruising around and came upon a pair if Wharfardale W70'S at a local thrift shop. They guy wanted $60 a piece. I talked him down to $40 for the pair. My wife asked when was enough enough. My response...I don't rightly know.:scratch2:

I also have a set of Wharfie W70 (W70D Mark II, actually). I might not be so strong if I found another set for that price. Fortunately, I haven't seen any AND I don't have $40 to spend, so that one's easy for now.

I've been on that same wagon as of lately . I passed up a pair of Heresys for $150 , KLH 6s for $10 and some Infinitys with a 10" and an EMIT for $12 . All were in really good condition . I too was starting to horde . But I had to raise some money when my mother passed away and sold a bunch of it . Now it feels good to just be happy with what I got . I dont feel like I have to have it , for some reason . Maybe I should see someone about this....

Same thing here today... I passed on a pair of JBL Century L100's for $100 that I do not need. But... I went back to look at them again before really deciding. It was a close thing. My little voice was yelling at me not to buy a speaker I won't use.

Well...I fell off the wagon

Didnt buy a tube amp...bought a MC cart instead..a fairly pricey one..ouch,..couldnt help myself..

Audio-Technica AT33PTGII - Double moving coil MC cart

does this mean I have to give my Audiophiles anonymous coin back ?:D

No. YOu did fine. You bought something that used up a bunch of gear funds and only got one small bit of kit. No problem hiding it somewhere, easy to move if you need to, doesn't need to be rebuilt, reconed or any other work other than putting it in its place. And you get to enjoy it and not stuff it in a closet, Ikea shelf system or whatever and just look at it.

As for the A40s for 13 bucks, add the cost of the correct surrounds, time and energy to refoam them and you will need to enjoy them or break even if you are not a collector. Great speaker to move to the next generation to get them hooked, though.

I did the A70 rebuild deal as I have never heard BA speakers. I have them in a system in the basement so they are not just sitting there.

I have also slowed grabbing just anything, partly because a recent car purchase grabbed the funds and partly because I might think about moving.

Since putting together my first system in 1967 I've never been without one.

It's probably why I've never had any desire to collect gear.

Those dome tweets in the A40s would make a nice upgrade for the old KLHs (or a multitude of older speakers)...humm...$12.99 a pair.

Of course it would be hard to throw the cabinets away.

:smoke:

If you would like, I can go get them for you. The absolutely have to be refoamed, and no idea if they even work, though.

Thanks but no. By the time I'd add shipping it wouldn't be such a great deal even if they did work.

The only pair of A40s I have are a pair a friend gave me. (no idea which 'type' they are) I refoamed them and was pleasantly surprised at the sound they made. So much so that I actually am looking for another pair, and the four will live up high near the ceiling in my kitchen.

just under 30 chunks of gear in your sig and you are not collecting? Uh OK. I probably have the same number actually hooked up around the house, too.

All the gear in my signature is in use in one system on a daily basis.

All of the gear in my signature is connected and in use in my system. You should note that one of the pieces is a surround processor. My Yamaha DVD player and TV are connected to it. It in turn feeds my preamp when it's operating in bypass mode. Two speakers, a dual sub woofer, two stereo power amps and an electronic crossover are for the rear channels when I play surround sources.

If I had a receiver (something I've never owned) especially a surround one, my equipment list would be much shorter.

Gear that I use every day in one system can hardly classify me as a collector. I don't have a closet or garage full of receivers, turntables and speakers. What I have I use.

I admit to being a little overboard with cassette decks (3). However, all three are in use and connected using a Russound TMS-3 switch box to one of the tape loops on my preamp.

Is it April 1st somewhere ?? I've posted this on HF, so I may as well post it here : I dont see how we can stop lusting after candy as long as we stand at the candy store window with the other fat kids. ;)

I don't stop wanting, I just stop buying.

At some point the wise figure out what they really want. I have had a number of collecting hobbies over the years, most notably cameras but including violins and cars (too much space required for those!). I sold off most of those collections in sequence as I realized I just could not pay attention to what they held. I then gave some thought to why I had acquired what I had and realized that it wasn't that I actually wanted to possess those things, but rather wanted to have experience of them, to have enough time with them to get to know them. I'm now down to two cars and a manageable collection of cameras which I actually use. I learned a lot along the way, had interesting life experiences, met some great people I would have missed otherwise and even made a bit of money.

It doesn't have to be a hoarder episode and it can be a wonderful boost to life. I have really nice things available for my use and pleasure. For me it goes in cycles and I can recognize and I accept that now. Give it some thought, be reflective.

i've also got to the "leave it!" stage...unless it's a cheap new old stock stylus that fits a cartridge body I have... can't seem to say no to those just yet..:sigh:
