Harmony Remote MX135 IS A JOKE !!!!!!!!!

Frist, let me say I own a Universal Remote MX950 and do all the programing myself. I even enter McIntosh and other "logos" assigned to where the hard buttons are on the LCD Screen.

Let me preface my own ability with computers. I am a webmaster, write html, run 5 websites, expert in Photoshop, Golive, PC and MAC operating systems, and know my way around the block with computers, programs and can figure most stuff out.

I thought "Wow they give you a Hamony Remote by Logitech with your 135.

1. I install the software on my Mac and it doesn't recognize the Remote.

2. I call Logitech in Nevada and get some sleazy guy who slurring and talkng so low and not really trying to be helpful.

3. So i install the software from the website and follow the procedure for installation.

4. However neither Satellite nor my Sony Bravia is on the list.

5. The software on the website is excruciatingly SLOW, inefficient, and often times dead ends you with no where to go as the solution is not listed.

Review: I did not stick with it, it took way to long, and between running back and forth to check what works and trouble shooting it can only be considered a JOKE.

The Universal Remote is so Superior, the software is straight foward, macros are easy to set up and MOST important, you are not forced to go on to a website where you are waiting forever to move foward for every addition.

I agree as well. I use the lowly MX500 and prefer the complete programming control of the Universal Remotes remotes compared to the Logitech remotes. I have a Logitech 680 (I think that's the model) but they don't work well when you have an AVR in the mix or there is not direct input control on your TV. IMO, they are designed for simple systems for the technology challenged. I won't be buying another that's for sure. :no:

Lowly MX500 it is not. It is one great remote. I had one, and when I have a friend who has a bunch of stuff, its the gift of choice for them. I bought the mx500 for my borther in law for Christmas.

Only think missing is being able to set it up on a computer.
 
What harmony remote are you referring to. My new harmony remote works seemlessly with my Mac and Mc! :scratch2:

659 which is delivered with the 135

If you are happy then you are happy :)

But

If you ever tried the MX500 that was mentioned here, or went up to the MX950 hand held, hard push button selection, you would never go back.:thmbsp:

You mean the 659 is normally bundled with a 135!???

Sorry have not had an opportunity to try the MX500/950 before. I will stay happy in my ignorance. BTW, My harmony software loaded very quickly, found all my equipment instantly (including 20 year old machines I had lost the remotes for, thank god!) and so far is working very well. May be they have improved in the latest versions :scratch2:

I did not mean that it is lowly compared to other remotes, only to it's bigger MX brothers. :D There was an aftermarket company making an interface with a USB cable so you could program the MX500 from your PC but they are now out of business. I'll probably move up the Universal Remote food chain on my next remote purchase. But I used a Marantz RC2000 MKII for many years so the transition to the MX was easy.

Howie,

This is what all the programable remotes do. 20 year old machines are in the list of codes easier than the latest model that came out last week. That's the trick.

If it works for you then, "If it aint broke dont fix it"

There is a world of remotes out there and different reasons why one model is better than another for each person. Feel, hard buttons versus touch screen, big small, programable, lights in the dark, but the most important ingredient for me is that I can set up macros which this model did not do.

A macro is a "set" of commands given to turn on ONLY certain SET's of devices. For instance, If my Processor gets turned on it automatically turns on the Preamp and the preamp goes into passthru mode. This is not what I would want when listening to musin not HT.

So I create a macro that turns on only the devices for stereo and not the Processor.

The macro for turning on my system to watch HT satellite is:
1. turn on tv
1a. Go to avi5 on the TV
2. turn on processor (which automatically turns Amps on)
3. turn on satellite
4. turn on video processor
4a. go to satellite on video processor selection
etc
6. Go to satellite mode on the remote

A good one to consider that does everything the MX950 does is the MX900 and its less expensive. It is really nice.

One tip: I took logos from the different brands reduced their pixel size to fit on te lcd sreen so when I go to the mx135 for instance I have the McIntosh logo.

For the TV the Sony logo, For the DVDO the DVDO logo, CD player a CD disc logo, DVD a DVD logo etc etc.

I like holding the remote in one hand and the buttons work for right or lefty. Wife friendly and you havae a set saved on your computer.

For the moment it works only with a PC, not mac OS. Rechargeable Dock is a great feature too.

Understood. Although I am fairly new to this macro thingy, I think my harmony does it ok. I have programmed several different macros such as dvd-video watching, cd listening, tv watching etc. For each one, the harmony only turns on those that I want so e.g. for dvd-video, my dvd player, c2200 (and set to dvd input), my projector, my a/v amp, my air-con! all comes on. If I only listen to cds, the macro does not turn on the projector, av amp, sets my c2200 to cd etc etc.

Am i doing this right? or have i missed something out?:scratch2:

p.s. unfortunately cos I have no remote trigger for passthru i have to manually turn on a transformer until I get a Mc a/v amp.

Excellent suggestions and I'm using a PC. The reason why I would upgrade is the ability to store the programming on my PC. I worry that my five year old twins will have an accident with my MX500 and I'll spend hours reprogramming the thing. It's easy enough to do but after owning the remote for three years I have it completely dialed in the exact way I want it. I have all the screens saved in excel to expidite the programming if needed again but I'd prefer to have the codes saved electronically.

The transition to a programable remote will be fairly easy. You will end up with a similar result, but the ease of programing on the PC widens the possibilities.:tresbon:

Only thing is to push a finger on the screen you need 2 hands. The holding hand and pushing hand. Expecially if you are movin around through different screens and button.

That's why I like th mx950. The buttons work whether you lefty or right as there are 2 sets, and everything can be done with one hand.

Leaves the other free to pick your nose with :)
 
My Mac harmony is parked....I think it's worth $12 on freeBay.
I picked up an 839 (i think thats the number) instead...
RF, and a charger base...it works great
