High-Pitched Tone in One Ear

thefragger

Certified Crazy.
Right, so for as long as I can remember (as little as 4~5y/o I guess) I've always had a high-pitched tone in my right ear that comes as goes. I've basically been tone-free for a little over three years now, but just recently had an episode and it's got me thinking now about what it could be. When I would have them more frequently they were anywhere from days to months apart. I should not that I also had many (many) migraines as a child that would completely cripple me. Knock on wood I haven't had one of those in a solid 8 years now.

A typical episode is as follows;
right ear falls silent
a steady tone 'fades in'
it's held at a very loud level for 4~5 seconds
the tone fades out to silence
normal hearing returns

This only ever happens with my right ear.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

This is the first time you've wondered why? Sounds like tinnitus / Miniere's. Kind of a mystery, but I have some friend's with Miniere's and I hear they have been making some progress on treatments lately. In any case, I think there are some well-known triggers that you could look up and avoid. Like with everything, most fun things are bad.

Really? Tinnitis since age 4? I remember it being so loud that I'd try to cover my ear to drown it out when I was younger, crying, too. It's not that bad anymore.

This most recent even happened while I was sitting at a desk working on homework. no vertigo is associated with the event. Hmm...

Well, I'll be darned, kids can be born with it and think that it's normal--just like me! I figured it was one of those things that everyone goes through, but grows out of.

Interesting.

It should be noted I don't hear any constant (background) noises.

I'm 18, don't blast music, drink or go to concerts. This used to happen at least once a day. Then I realized I was drinking 3-4 Monsters and Rocksars a day. Haven't had it more than once since I stopped. Without caffeine, my ears are dead silent in terms of biologically-caused background noise, probably have a S/N ratio of 130db :D

Edit: This problem probably had to do with my ritalin combining with the caffeine as well.

Now, that's interesting. I have ADD and caffeine is a natural substitute for ritalin. I was on ritalin when I was 7 but was switched to coffee when I turned 8. Very interesting.
