How to check a needle / stylus ?

I have a used turntable that someone gave me a while ago, and I just ran across it in my storage area. It's a JVC AL - A158.

I wouldnt mind hooking it up with my basement system, but I'd like to verify that the needle isn't screwed up, possibly causing damage to my albums.

Could someone please tell me how check to see if a needle is usable, or in need of replacement? Thanks.

Also: Does anyone know if that model of turntable is good, bad, average, junk, etc.?

No comment on the TT as I don't know. Personally I use the lens out of a projector or other old device that uses a lens. Many work extremely nice and are so much cheaper than buying a lupe. Lenses can be found at most any thrift store, even if you have to buy a complete projector for a couple bucks.

First clean the stylus using denatured/rubbing alcohol and a stiff brush, making sure to stroke away from the shaft so as not to bend or damage it.

Use the lens and a strong lamp and examine the needle and shaft. Needle wear and/or damage may not be obvious, but if it is (with low magnification) would indicate a bad needle. Any nicks, kinks or other damage in the shaft means time to replace.

Not sure about others, but I'd have to use my microscope for a proper examination of the needle. This too can be had cheap at a thrift store.

I do have a 10X loupe that I've used for coins..... just wasnt sure what to look for, or if that is even powerful enough.

The best way to check a stylus is to play a record. If it is distorted the needle may well be shot.

There is no way to check a stylus for wear with regular magnifying stuff like that loupe. The wear pattern is sooooooo small, you won't see it. There has been a bunch of discussion about this but you can use the loupe to see if the stylus is bent or needs to have a general cleaning.

Sparky has written a lot about viewing styli and how all the junk folks drag out of the drawer is just not going to be able to show the wear.
