I need a BIG amp for Dahlquists

I used a Dynaco 400 for years. The Dyna 410 is the same amp with meters. Dyna has a power limiter, but you don't need it.
The best combination I've heard is with a Yamaha B-2. The synergy is worth the money.

I used a Dynaco 410 run through a Sumo Electra for many years. Now I use a VanAlstine Ultra preamp and Ultra Double power amp and am happy with the results. Sold my 410 on eBay for about 200 bucks a few years back, which was about what I paid for the kit in 1979!

This is my first post so I thought I'd chime in when I had something "valuable" to say in my area of "expertise!"

Trouble is J.D. designed a speaker that was better than nearly every amp that existed in 1974.

Well I'll chime in again. Today I had my DQ-20i's up to the Hafler P-500 and it was a disturbingly good match, plenty of down low power, kick drums and all, and smooth highs, very dreamy. Mids good but not perfect (i.e. not Luxman).

Compared it to the VanAlstine modded DH-500 which had a bit of veiled dampness or slowness to it. (I am guessing that it's an attempt to make heavy horsepower 60+ lb iron sound more 'tube-like' and missing the point.) Maybe if it had the full mod with the toroids, I don't know. Or we didn't let it warm up long enough?

Or my P-500 is just in incredible shape, or a better pair up with the MC phono stage in my C-4.

Agree that my smaller DH-220 was not up to the 10's, so it found a new home. The Yamaha AX-900U was more dynamic. Haven't gotten to hear a 5002 or 2002 or B2 on DQs but they should satisfy. I'll try my M-4 again but it may just have too few output transistors for 10's although 8's (maybe 12's ) should be fine with 170wpc/4 Ohms.

I had a Crown DC-300 (they don't have meters, but I wouldn't worry about the lack of protection circuits) sold it and bought an SAE Mk IIICM (has meters). Liked the Crown, loved the SAE. Sold both. I also sold the Yamaha and they were both good sounding and reliable, I just never took one home. I should have.

The Citation amp 70salesguy is talking about is the Citation 12. A conservative 60WPC rated amp. It is surprising in its power and good sounding.

The ones that I wouldn't buy or recommend are:

Soundcraftsman (cheaply made)

Bose (cheaply made)

Phase Linear (die too easily with hard speaker loads, fine with a pair of Advents) I sold them, and they came back too often.

Did you notice I sold the Phase Linear and didn't like them?

I hope that is some help. We all have opinions.

adcom 555 mk11,not as smooth as the ma5002,but still sounds good. had mine since mid 90's.sent it 2 big sky audio had all caps&resistors replaced with new higher quality ones, man what a difference, would put up against any amp in its power range!

I bought the Inter-M 10.5, only one of them at first, was not sure how they sound like, but they are very good, I compared it to my Harmon Kardon PM665 and found the Inter-Mwas just as good, but the HK PM665 is over 25 years old, so this may not be fair to the HK. The Inter-M 10.5 was designed as a music amp, at 350 watts RMS per channel, it can be bridged and also has two cooling fans on the back. This way I figured that it's brand new and I don't need to do any recapping etc. I paided $750 canadian for it, usually in the U.S, it can probally be bought for less.

Ehhh...pro audio amps. A person after my own heart. :thmbsp:

Got the DQ-10s, got the new foams for the woofers coming soon, and I'm cleaning up the speaks right now. Now I need the amp. I prefer something with VU meters that isn't going to break the bank, around 300-400 dollar range. I'd like the amp to be around the same vintage as the rest of my gear, mid-1970s. Obviously, it needs to be able to double as an arc welder, considering what it will be driving. :D The amp also needs to be relatively easy to service. I'm really leaning toward a Soundcraftsmen MA5002, now to find one. Maybe a Phase Linear 400?

An Adcom amp/preamp might fill the bill for those dqs, nice simple design, with plenty of power and headroom
