OK guys. i was given this wonderfull  peice of gear. It doesnt work. Ive been told by people at AA that it needs to have all caps replaced. Im pretty sure this is the MC240 but it is missing a switch on the face that i have seen on other 240's. This has all the tubes. i dont know if theyre all originals or not i think the power tubes are because they all say made for Mcintosh by rca. When i got it, the whole top was rusty so i did a little cleaning up The bottom cover is missing and all the lettering is gone. I dont even think this has a power switch. I dont know what im going to do with it yet. but am contemplatnig selling if i dont wanna invest in fixing it. What would this thing go for in this condition. DOA and needs work. no chrome or bottom plate. all tubes.? Thanks guys

heres all the pics.

I don't know. do you have any friends who could tackle it? I just bought a 240 two weeks ago. In the shop right now being gone over. It was in pretty nice shape. Paid $1650 for it...Good price. I would venture this would not bring much in the condition its in. But all I can say is they sound so sweet!!!!!! Gonna need lotsa parts it looks like....Good luck!!!!!!!Ron.

Grumpy may know. He purchased a MC240 in decent condition and perhaps could give you some idea what is involved with getting it up-n-running and what value it holds.

You would be better off selling it for parts or break it down and sell the parts separate. The chassis would need replating to be of any real value, but that would mean totally disassembling the unit and rebuilding it. Major undertaking. Let me know if you decide to sell for parts, I may be interested.

yeah i would be intersting in selling it. I know its going to be much too big of a job for me to tackle to get this thing up and running. wards web, i dont know what this is worth. i was told probbly a couple hundred. But the thing is i dont know if the tubes are good or if the autoformers are good. This unit was turned on because the guy i got it from said when he turned it on the choke was overheating which everyone thinks means the can caps are bad and drawing too much current therefore overheating the choke. I still dont know if i want to break it down and sell parts seperatly or all in one heap. How much do think its worth W.W. i would have a price but i have no idea! :dunno:

On second thought, i will feel way too guilty to have been given this thing from my elec. teacher and then turn around and sell it. so im going to tell him what needs to be done to get it working and see if he wants it back. if not then i will be selling/trading it. i will know this week for sure.

It did have the tube cage, correct? That by itself could be worth$125 to 200 depending on cond. The shop i dropped mine off to, told me to take the tube cage with me orit probably would disappear some way or another!!!!!!!!

yes it has the tube cage. but its not one of the original ones. its a reproduction with the round holes. and it has alittle bit of rust on the screen.

thanks that link had alot of pics i needed to see. and it is confirmed its a 240. because i finally saw one without that voltage switch. because that switch is missing can you determine weither it was an eariler or later model.

You know, it cost you nothing, and don't have to do it right away.
Any expenses would be recovered regardless. I did my 2 MC 60 mono's for about @80. for orange drop capacitors, a diode, and the resistors for the output tube circuit. Your costs should be about the same.
You could ebay the cage to get the cash if needed and
may well cover soldering tools. I am not any pro by any means BTW. If you think you may want to d.i.y. an amp someday, this would be a great inexpensive learning experience. You can post
for help, McIntosh will make you a photocopy service manual for $10. plus shipping. Just make sure you know how to handle working with tube gear. Just a thought.

Drawing a lot of current could be an indication of bad Solinium Rectifiers. The 240 has three if I remember correctly. Not saying the caps aren't bad. I have a Mac MR-67 here right now that was drawing too much current I replaced the SR's with some diodes and resistors and the current draw is way down now. It still has too much leakage to the chassis and will end up replacing the filter caps. Even with these problems it still worked pretty damn good.

On mine a rectifier , a can cap, and all the caps are being replaced. It still sounded excellent. The repair shop I'm using told me if I think it was good before, wait til I hear it now. The right channel was real hissy. They said I wasn't getting optimum power out of the unit. Should get it back in the middle of this next week!!!!!!!
