miracord 46

so the same day i found the dual1229 i found this for $15. Put the spare cart on it, and it all works perfectly except for the part where i went to 0 out the tone arm. couldnt get the weight off the headshell, had the counterweight as far back as it would go, ended up adding a monsterous weight on the counter and holding it on with gorilla tape, now it works fine, however you may think that this may not be a suitable or lasting solution, me either..so any thoughts or docs on this? ve has no manuals for this model that i could see(rechecking the walmart glasses) close as we get is for a 50h and thats all deutsch to me. other than that, as i say, its a nice smooth well working machine. as always, appreciate any help forthcoming in advance. also looked under realistic in ve..no dice there either, found some old posts here, but nothing too specific beyond attaboy that i could see. miracord.jpg

really searched kinda all over for anything to do with this thing, even looked in the 76 rs catalog where it was the flagship of the fleet that year. just a little nudge in a direction is alls we need

The Vinyl Engine has the only document I'm aware of... and it's only partially in English (TOC).

Are you sure the counter balance isn't on backwards?

I've got a slightly different 46. Mine has square buttons and a different head-shell (same as the 50), and I've had no problems zeroing out the tone arm. But, if the counterbalance was backwards, it wouldn't be able to balance properly (perhaps).

It's a great deck, BTW.

i rechecked the counterweight issue and found this not to be backwards, basic setup is a nylon piece that is cogged, slides up in the tonearm meshing with the adjust nob, the counterweight itself just sort of sits on it. odd thing is that the counterweight isnt much of one at all its just a black plastic shell on the outside and microthin piece of sheetmetal in a highly polished mirror finish inside ..also inside some little nubbies around the edge, as if to grip something like ummm the actual counterweight. now, all i have to do is find something heavy enough that i can machine to fit up inside that, so i dont need the huge chunk of brass duct taped to the top. ty pm, your response was the inspiration i needed, and yes, they do make a nice machine dont they?

i appreciate the offer, but i dove into it almost trial and error. had a brass weight that was close from a scale set, so bought some egg sinkers, made a little tin mold about the right size, melted the sinkers down and poured. shaved the result smooth and exact size then drilled and rechecked on the balance until i got it right, then a dab of hot glue underneath either side as a retainer, works well and its so much easier to balance with the weight slung under where it belongs

Early 70s Radio Shack re-badged turntable. A good guess on how to find them in a catalog is look from 1970 to 1973. I am pretty sure I have one listed in an Allied/Radio Shack catalog. There is one on ebay right now (search Elac 46) with some fantastic photos, although the Realistic badge was yanked off the base. The seller also has a copy of the manual as well. No harm in offering the guy a couple of bucks for a photo copy. Good luck.
