Needing some help finding some upgrade speakers

Hi.
I'm needing some help finding some upgrade speakers.

I currently have Technics SB-2744. I like the sound and the size, but I have a feeling I'm missing out on a little sound quality, like it's "almost" there. I read a lot of reviews on them and people say they are dogshit. So, I tried going with some Fluance SX6W bookshelf speakers. The Fluance were very neutral sounding and being 2 way, left a big hole in the vocals. It was not even in the same class as the Technics, a big mistake and I shipped them back.

So here we are again, seeking the next level.
I like to play 60's to 80's vinyl. The room is small, 9' x 12', I don't play loud so I don't need anything much larger than the Technics. Want to stay vintage, under $500. After hearing the Fluance, I think I like speakers that have more "color" to them as opposed to neutral sound. Something with a greater sound stage. I'm not brand loyal. Would like a 30% upgrade over the Technics.

Here is the rest of my components.
Technics SA-5070 Receiver
Technics SL-B2 Turntable
Audio Technica CN5625AL

Man there’s a long list of $500 speakers that should out perform those. Not saying there’s anything wrong with them. Honestly I would think for $250 you could do really well. I spent $350 on my Klipsch Heresy’s. When I first started I got a pair of Advent 6003’s for $100 and that’s still the best $100 I’ve ever spent on gear. I’d would just be patient, you’ll be thrilled with what $500 will get you with a little negotiating.

Out of all the audio components available in the used market, speakers are the biggest bargain and the most readily available. Often the wife says they gotta go, and the score is on!
I could recommend some but you are better off looking around and then asking questions about each one you are considering. Let us know where you are from, some of us may take up the search for you.
Welcome to AK!

Go to the search box at top right and type in "which speakers" including the quotes. You'll find a bunch of threads recommending a lot of good speakers to look for.

My advice is to always try to listen to anything you're thinking of buying. That's the sad thing about the demise of audio stores.

I agree. That is what a person would do. Go to an audio place and listen. That is gone. Everything is online, the irony, there is so much out there, so many reviews. I'm not sure how a person can make a decision without wasting a lot of time. I think direct suggestions to some models recommended would help me out, like the ohm suggestion, would put me at least in the ballpark. I'm in Canada. Most of my searching would be local on Kajiji or online through Ebay (probably not a good idea because of shipping). I'll also do a search in the which speakers as you suggested.

If there are any more suggestions it would be appreciated. I'll have to make a short list of maybe, a top 5 to look for. I could spend weeks researching stuff but I really don't want too.

There are a bunch that you'll see recommended over and over: Advent, EPI, Genesis, Klipsch, Pioneer come to mind. Many of the brands you would normally think make good electronics did not make many (or any) memorable speakers. Those include Technics, Panasonic, to some extent Sansui, Kenwood. There are exceptions but fairly rare to find in the wild.

I'll throw one out there that will probably meet your needs both space and budget-wise--the JBL S38. They are a fairly small format speaker, but pack a lot of punch for the size--the -3dB point is 45Hz and they are rated at handling 175w--and I have actually applied double that amount of power to them. For classic rock, they'll give you all the "in your face" JBL sound you could use in a room that size, but still have all the detail to sound great. And you can find them rather regularly on that auction site for ~$250 a pair--give or take a few bucks. There are threads here on AK with more detailed specs and reviews.

Dynaco A-25 bookshelf size. Got a pair that I use and they sound great. Look on EBay and you can get a nice pair for around 200.00

Heresys are great, very little power gets them singing. Bass is adequate if set up as designed, I'm currently using a pair in my bedroom with a 34watt Kenwood KA4006. Schveet little vintage amp with a warm character that works well with the Klipsch house sound. Expect to pay $400 for a decent pair, more for the veneered versions of the series one, more for the newer versions. But that can be a blessing if like me you prefer the series one.

Actually had two pair of Heresys, sold one pair for what I paid after using them for 5yrs lol. Kind of takes the risk out of buying a pair, if you don't like them just move them on.

Sold my living rm pair to offset my recent purchase, AR58s. Wanted something that didn't need subwoofers, and would look awesome with my vintage Kenwood gear. Furniture grade cabinets housing the AR dome midrange 3/way design thats so respected. Rated to 37hz definitely reach lower than the Heresy so my two Dayton subs could be moved into the media rm.

These fly way under the radar being associated with later lesser iterations of the 58 with cone midrange drivers, vinyl covered particle board cabinets, etc I was able to pick mine up for $275 lol.

Heres a picture with one grill removed to show the drivers.

Good morning. I have decided to go on a quest for something in the ADS line, a company I never knew existed before I dropped by here. After reading reviews in this forum and listening to things online, seems it would be hard not to make a good choice with them. Not sure which model I will go with but I feel I'm on the right track now. Thanks all for your advice. I'll post anything I buy in the future. Here is a sound bite of something I found that sounds amazing to me, the detail!
