what is up with the coating on the transformer?

Case is REAL nice and the faceplate seems very, very clean.

Just the 'mung' (potting plastic) they used on the transformers. You will see the same thing on many of the Sony amps of the late '70s through the late '80s. At least on the transformers that aren't canned. No big deal (no deal at all, actually). Perfectly normal.

They all seem to have that stuff on the transformer. It looks like rust in most pictures but it's some sort of epoxy or plastic coating. Another thing not conveyed well in photos is the size of these amps - they are large and heavy!

I bought a 2010 from rstsgsas last Nov - very well packed and performs perfectly. It's my 'keeper' integrated.

B-2, didn't you have a few CA-2010s at one time?

I have one, (check out my avatar) along with the ct-1010. I work from home a lot and just happened to have mine cranking out some Ten Years After (was feeling nostalgic). Mine has some of that "stuff" on the transformer and I now feel better.

Yes....and, if I wasn't listening to VFET gear I would most likely be listening to a fully refurb'd CA-2010 and CT-7000 and YP-D10 and CDX-1120 and NS-1000 combo. Once sanity returns (give me a few more years to play), that is probably what I'll go back to.

Someone did the right thing and BINed rstsgsas' 2010 for $300. That walnut case sure looks nice and I'd have been all over that if I didn't already have one...

With 3 B2s up right now on that auction site it sure is tempting to go the same route, but I'm currenly sitting on a 2010, 1010 and an M4! And the M4 is such a nice amp that sells for soooo cheap (I've seen them sell for $75!) I'm tempted to get another!

I foolishly let myself get outbid a YP-D10 2 weeks ago - I saw Merrylander going for it so I cancelled my esnipe and held back only to watch us both get out-bid!

Quiet now, you'll drive the prices up on the M-4. I got mine for under $60. It did need a little repair work, but I still don't have much into it, and I couldn't be happier with its performance.

I think the Yamaha M-4 is one of the most under rated vintage power amps out there. I'm shocked at how little those things go for! They were part of the same vintage era as the B-2. I think I read somewhere it was the advent of the output transistors used in the M-4 that lead Yamaha to move away from their more expensive V-FET designs. The M-4 is one of the few power amps that Yamaha took the time to release a technical report on. The outputs were part of a new process consisting of a parallel array of small geometry transistors built on the same substrate having very low junction capacitance that resulted in lots of bandwidth; otherwise put, they were (are) nice and fast.
