No Squeezebox...what now?

Folks seem to rave about the Squeezebox Touch, but alas, it's no more. Discontinued by (il)Logitech.

What's the next best - or better - streaming gadget?

There are a whole bunch of ways to make your own squeezebox, because you can download player software for windows, linux, mac, and android. For example, you can just use a cheap netbook as a squeezebox player, and then upgrade with a USB DAC.

Hummm lets see... You don't! At least costing the same as the SBT did!
Olive is preparing an interesting gadget, but different in it's conseption.

Is name is Olive one

I'm still shaking my head at Logitech's stupidity too. I can only assume they were losing money on Squeezboxes.

Does anyone understand how the Olive One interfaces with an amp? Is there another box with RCA outs or Bluetooth only? Looks like a cool concept if the fidelity is there.

And does your iphone play hi-res 24/96 flac files?

Or play internet radio
Or play all the services they provide?

Sure I should be able to stream high res from my laptop to my iPhone. I do not see any issue. And yes I have pandora Spotify etc. what am I missing here?

I've made a few questions to them and it is still and on going process, maybe they will add RCA output.

This is the answer from my email.

"The ONE is currently slated to have direct speaker out and Bluetooth plus Wifi Direct & Wifi Miracast digital output.

We've received many requests to implement RCA connectivity. Later in the campaign we will ask our backers to see how many people would like an optional RCA adapter for their Olive ONE.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you!

Best regards,
Daniel"

That's pretty crazy that they are crowdfunding the development. This is the first time I've seen this. Looks like $420 gets you one shipped now. I don't like the idea of a floating spec though. All you can do is hope they adopt your suggestions for spec or else you may end up with a piece of gear that doesn't even have the features you want. For me, lack of RCA outs is a deal-breaker.

This is the first time I've seen this.
Well it's been very common the past year, although mostly not for audio gear (wireless controller gadgets, desktop gadgets, hacker toys, tiny computers, toys & board games...). There's the Orbit turntable right now, though (long thread on AK). The first really big one, AFAIK, was the Ouya game console, which just recently shipped to game developers.

Buy a used SB - they still work and will for the foreseeable future. Lots of them on fleabay.

My 2 Duets work fine.

Maybe it's myself who's missing something... How do you do it? Do you use a App to play flac files in the iphone?

You should be able to use Airfoil (or something similar) on a PC or Mac - with itunes or other music lib app - and then stream directly bit perfect to your iPhone running the AirFoil speaker app.

I've played with it very slightly with a freeware version of airfoil and it was pretty cool. I liked the SB when it first came out - but couldn't really justify what I would get that I didn't already have.

Thanks,

Chris

There are also music player apps that will play FLAC directly on iphones.

I have the Touch. Will I not be able to use it in time?
You'll be able to use it just fine, but if you're only using it through mysqueezebox.com instead of running your own server on a computer, there will be a hiccup. I'm sure the open source folks that work on the software will release a new version to clean up the mess, though.

I use Logitech Media Server to play flac of my hard drive and use the Touch for internet radio. Will they discontinue the Logitech Media Server?

A number of points come to mind reading this thread;

Crowdsourcing - Much of the development around Squeezebox and Transporter in the Slim Devices (pre-Logitech) days was 'crowdsourced'. In my time I know a bunch of selected customers and developers were given prototype Transporter hardware to help us test and develop the product. It's not quite the same as crowdfunding, but the community involvement in new audio products has some history around the Squeezebox platform.

In terms of alternative products there seems to be a limited number of options available

Sonos is the best for folks who don't need hi-res support and don't have massive libraries. It's pretty reliable, the user experience is pretty good and it usually integrates music services faster than other systems.

Sooloos is definitely the best UI and feature set for the serious collector or audiophile but even with the new 'entry-level' $1000 player you have to buy their storage etc so you're looking at a minimum of $4K for a system.

There's a bunch of audio manufacturers using streaming modules from Streams Unlimited (was Phillips Streamium group) and they are all pretty decent in feature set and can use any DLNA app for control.

However in chatting with a colleague the other day we ended up agreeing that probably the best real alternative to the Squeezebox for features and future flexibility is some sort of small computer running a player app that you can remotely control and then running out to a USB DAC. Computer Audiophile have come up with some designs based around J River running on a Win8 box but I figure your could probably use a Mac Mini running suitable software. It's not as nice an appliance as any of the above products but it does deliver a lot of features and growth potential using hardware that can be bought pretty cheaply these days.

Just my 2c
