1.This 10 year old cd player unit has a USB in the front but its an old format. Is it possible to do a firmware update
and get the USB to play FLAC and WAV files?????

2.
Also... if you want to use the oppo as a DAC for a portable digital player... what single coax in the back should you plug into..??My digital player has a single coax connector....its an iBasso..

Go to Oppo’s web site for user documentation, and firmware updates.

My understanding: The DV-980H’s USB input supports WAV files, but not FLAC. Correction: Based on brief testing, it appears the DV-980H's USB input supports MP3, not WAV (or FLAC). (I'll leave it to others to perform more exhaustive testing.)

I think the coax connection is an output – not an input.

it doesnt play WAV..I tried it... its a joke because it wouldnt take much for Oppo to work up the files that are needed to play flac and wav and make them available. It would be a good hack for someone to figure it out and make it available.

I use the USB inputs on my UDP-205, BDP-105, and BDP-95 to play hi-res FLAC files, and WAV files. (Players listed in reverse chronology.)

(I do not own the earlier BDP-83, and don’t know what types of files it supports from its USB port.)

I use a DV-980H (older than all Oppo models listed above) for playing SACD and CD in my office system. I had never tried playing music from the USB drive on my DV-980H. (In my office I use my PC for playing FLAC and WAV music files.)

I just did a brief test of my DV-980H, and was able to play an MP3 file from a USB drive, but not WAV. (Apparently I was wrong in my post above about WAV.)

IMO Oppo does a good job of providing firmware updates to its recent products, sometimes delivering new features at no additional charge. My understanding is that the DV-980H is 4 generations old. (More than 10 years old.) Every manufacturer must draw a line on updating old products.

IME the DV-980 works good as an SACD/CD player. It seems to me that if you want more advanced features than what the DV-980H provides, you need to buy a newer product. (I don't know anything about hacking old products.)

The first Oppo unit that could be used as a DAC via its optical/coaxial inputs was the BDP-105.

This Oppo model does not play FLAC or WAV from USB. Only MP3 and AAC. It also CANNOT be used as DAC. Though Oppo 980 is a very good CD/DVD-V/DVD-A/SACD transport. It also can play home made SACD from DVD-R media.

If you need digital output from SACD to use with separate DAC, you can use one of HDMI audio de-embeders. It will output SACD content in PCM 24/88.2 format.

it would be an interesting hack project for a bored college kid to break into the firmware and get the modern USB files in there...all the hardware is already to go....how bout it kids..??

No value. It is more valuable to hack modern Oppo players, like when 103/105 models were made to rip SACD content.
