Picked up my first Marantz receiver (2235B)!

Hi gang,
AK member Speakerlabfan shot me a PM linking
a CL listing of a 2235B in my small seaport town
(Thanks for thinking of me Dick :D)
It was described as cutting out in one channel
but in good cosmetic condition.
I ended up trading a Technics SL-D3 T.T. that needed
a stylus for the Marantz.
I took the top & bottom off and gave it Two cleanings
with deoxit and Shazamm,Ive got a nice sounding
and good looking receiver!
Ive got it hooked up to a pair of Polk monitor 10's
and its sounds like a very conservative 35 watts:yes:
My antenna's are already up for a WC-22 case
Nice way to break me in to the world of Marantz huh!

Very nice!! You are right about the conservative power. seems like these marantz's can run forever power wise. Dont know much about the technics table you traded, but sounds like you got one heck of a deal, and the seller seems to be happy as well. so good deal for both of you. How does it drive your polk 10's?

Marko,

Congratulations on one very clean and sweet looking Marantz!

I'm curious too, how does it sound with the Polks?

Thanks Laraine & Carl,
Plenty of juice to run the 6 ohm Polks,More midrange than
Im use to and seems to pull out the mudiness in the bass that the monitor 10's have a reputation for, compared to the
monitor 7's.It will take abit for me to get use to the sound~

Please take a look at the pic's,The tuning meter & signal
strength meter have shadow silhouette's,Whats up with that ?

Pop the cover and see if something is blocking the light.
OR, someone may have replaced the lamps with the wrong type because that was all they could find. That's my guess.

Nice receiver though. One of my favorite Marantz receivers.

What the heck is this

Hi Rob,
I unhooked everything and popped the top to peek
Didnt see anything obvious blocking the lights
but when I went to turn it upside down to take
the bottom off,I heard something move inside :scratch2:

I found this small triangular metal piece nestled
in the corner by the power switch.
It is about 1 3/4" by 1 1/2" and has Paper glued
on all the flat sides,
There is a small flange with holes for Two small screws,
Where does this piece belong ??? :saywhat:
Im hoping it has to do with the shawdows in the meters ?

Maybe this was the culprit shorting out the one channel and deoxit had nothing to do with it ?
Glad it didnt fry something serious :sigh:

Mark,

I've worked on a number of Marantz receivers and I have never come across one those things. You should check to see if all the bulbs are the correct bulbs and see if anything else is loose. If the bulbs run to hot they will melt the white plastic bulb housing.

Carl

Mark, that is a shield that goes around the volume control and between the control and the power switch. It is secured by screws through the front chassis.

Here it is in the 2235B parts breakdown.

Catrafter is the correct, do check, make sure no srews are loose and bouncing around.

A relamping after that is simple and you will be proud of the results.

A relamping would also be something to do while you are in there as well as Deoxiting all of the pots ans switches, and replace the vellinium paper, sometimes known as parchment paper which can be had by talking to the people at the Deli/Bakery or by going to the craft store and looking for vellinium paper, it is used in front of the lamps as a diffuser and will yellow from heat and time, the greenish tint to the lighting suggests that, normally Marantz faces are blue. While you are doing it look for any obvious missing pieces resembling your find, if you do find where it is from, I think you will find that it is missing from the light housing above one of the meters, I suggest JB weld quick set, it can withstand the heat of the lamps, contact, member dgwojo as suggested in the link, for the correct lamps, the meter lamps and dial lamps are 8v 200ma he is the MAN when it comes to Marantz lamps, otherwise 8v 200 ma are hard to find.

Great looking receiver, I really enjoy mine in my office each day, I beleive you will find this to be an excellent reviever.

Let us know what you find.

Jim

Thanks Tom,
Thats the location of whereabouts I found it.
You'd think the screws would be in there somewhere,
I better take it apart again!
Say Tom,Have you ever seen the shadows I have in the meters before ?

Thanks to you too Jim,
You must of responded while I was typing my last post,
Time to take a look see again!

I had edited my post and it may not be clear, if you need to reinforce the plastic use the same JB weld, it can be sanded and drilled if you need to rebuild the plastic.

I would make very sure the screws are not floating around inside somewhere, they could cause a tramatic short.

Jim

I found the loose piece after taking the bottom off originally
and theres Noway it could have ended up below if it fell down from up above,So I took the bottom off again and found where it belongs which is around the volume pot
to protect and seperate from the power switch I assume.
(Tom you had it right)
No screws to be found anywhere~?
I loosened the two screws for the meter lamps and slid out
the housing and the bulbs are soldered into place horizontally which I beleive is causing the shadows,
They should be head on pointing towards the meters right ?
The dail lights are deep blue compaired to a green/blue
for the meters,So I'll search out the parchment paper and get on that!
Thanks for the help,You guys rock!

Mark, I'd like to think I had something to do with your new Marantz, bein' Marantz lovin' stuwee afterall, but, "knows what this
Doohickey is before I tear into it." -Sluggo quoteth.

Did my way of describing things rub off on you or what. :D Doohickies, Thing-a-mabobs, and Whatsit's are my favorites :D

Looks like ya pulled me into the Yamaha freaks, enjoy the three-martini Marantz sound :thmbsp::D

I reckon I picked it up from me Austrailian Mum
but reading some of your flipperdegibbits about whatcha'macallits sure has something to do with it!

Beautiful 2235B!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Marantz. As mentioned above, replace that yellowed vellinium paper. It's just not a Maranz without that captivating blue glow.

Thanks Alex and welcome to the wonderful world of AK!
I pick up the paper today and hope to get to it soon,
The dail lights are a deep blue,Its the meters that are tinted
alittle, but I'll replace paper for them both.
Im getting used to the sound and like it!
Great rock & roll receiver~

The meter lamps are the same as the dial lamps. 8V 200mA fuse type, IN1008007. Forum member dgwojo has them and all the other lamps you may need. Shoot him a PM.
